Re: Why Constipation?

Post by webslave »

I don't think there is a direct relationship between chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and constipation. It may be that with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome you are less active, or you have changed your diet, and that contributes to constipation. Many men with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome have loose stools. You may also have the constipation-predominant IBS (IBS-C).

Good question.

If you have urologic sensitivity.there is more and more evidence that it could affect the neighbord organs. i.e. Sigmoid colon.

I used to get constipated when I started on the Elavil, but this isn't a problem anymore.

I just drink a lot of water and start off my day with organic oatmeal and I stretch my abdominals all day, whenever I get the chance. I've been regular 2/3 times a day with normal stools for the last several months.

Excessive gas

Post by ockerdoc »

Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask if anyone has problems with burping a lot as a symptom. I can't work out whether my excessive burping is separate to my CPPS. I have most other symptoms of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome such as pain after eating certain foods, intolerance of caffeine, poor sexual function off and on, constipation. I have a feeling it is linked and I tried omeprazole but the side effects were terrible so I was wondering of anyone has used an alternative. Any info much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Sounds like could be GERD (aka GORD). Try Zantac, lose weight if obese, raise top of bed 200mm off ground, avoid very oily or acid foods.

Thanks webslave, do you think antihistamines might help with my CPPS? I noticed on an earlier post you said you take them. I know high levels of histamine could cause excess acid thus burping. What antihistamine do you take? I was thinking of trying L-methionine as its meant to lower histamine levels naturally.

Cheers

I don't take any medications, and have not for some years now. For histamine, try large doses of ascorbic acid (buffered) like "Ester C", and quercetin (Quercetin).

Post by robertpagen »

Why the bed should be 200 mm off the ground?

Be well,

From NIDDK recommendation for GERD: "Raise the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches by securing wood blocks under the bedposts. Just using extra pillows will not help."
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which is common. GER occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens spontaneously, for varying periods of time, or does not close properly and stomach contents rise up into the esophagus. GER is also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation, because digestive juices—called acids—rise up with the food. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach.

When acid reflux occurs, food or fluid can be tasted in the back of the mouth. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus it may cause a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn or acid indigestion. Occasional GER is common and does not necessarily mean one has GERD. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems. People of all ages can have GERD.

Does anyone have issues with, um, excessive gas at the other end?

I've been noticing that a lot lately. I have no idea if it's a part of the progression of my pelvic-floor dysfunction or what.

Flatulence is listed as a possible side effect of the drug you are taking, Elavil (amitriptyline).

Hey guy. I think gas is a reaction your rectal area has to try and right itself. Similar to when something gets caught in your throat and your body starts to burp. I think passing gas is an effort by your body to loosen what it might feel is an obstruction or imbalance in your lower body. ;)

Good to know my body is trying to right itself. In the meantime, I'm buying more air freshener. <.<

Anxious and depressed ... Elavil/Neurontin?

Post by ockerdoc »

Hi Guys, I had treatment for genuine bacterial prostatitis approximately 5 years ago which left me with pelvic pain symptoms. I have been taking high doses of valerian extract since that time on a daily basis which has helped a lot. I recently realised I was getting really sleepy and anxious in the daytime and figured these were side effects of the valerian so I stopped immediately. I did feel better for about a week after stopping but then I think my nervous system kicked in big time because the neural pain in and around my pelvis is very high especially after exercise. Chronic back pain and the back of my legs are very stiff all the time. I don't have any urinary symptoms just no libido and severe erectile dysfunction which is a real downer. Also my anxiety levels have gone through the roof I've never been this anxious before but I don't know if this is because I stopped the valerian so quickly. I need something for the neuralgia so I was thinking neurontin and then maybe the Elavil to help with the pain, anxiety and depression I'm feeling at the moment. I'm a fit 39 year old guy with wife and three kids under four with lots of work to do and I just have no motivation at all at the moment. I take quercetin daily do yoga/stretching etc but haven't had any physical therapy. I have seen various urologists who just say it will burn itself out. Well its been 5 years and its definitely still burning!

Any thoughts on neurontin and Elavil?

I don't want to go back on the valerian as I want my nervous system to settle down on its own without being suppressed by the valerian

Any advice much appreciated

Cheers

You're struggling because your commitment to getting better is low. Sorry to be brutally honest.

How do I know? You have not filled in your signature, and that's always a sign of low motivation. Fill it out now, or people don't know how to respond to you.
