My psychiatrist has been cycling me through the standard millieu of drug cocktails for refractory (stubborn) depression which took hold of me and, like my chronic pelvic pain, has barely let go for about 7 years now. Meanwhile, I had plain stopped seeking help from my urology group, all the members of whom seemed to lapse into narcoleptic episodes when I spoke the 3 most dreaded words in their daily practice - Male Pelvic Pain.
So I was utterly amazed to realize one evening a few weeks ago that for the first day in months if not years I had gone through a day without significant pain in the usual places, i.e., testicles, penis etc. So I asked myself, "what's different, what's different, whats different?", and the only difference in my daily routine that I could come up with was that my psych had switched me to a different anti-convulsant, gabapentin, than what I had been previously taking (as a so-called mood stabilizer), trileptal.
Considereing the media beating which Neurontin has been taking lately (which I only yesterday learned of), some may be skeptical. All I know is this: Neurontin largely clears the body within about 8-9 hours after taken (orally). And if I fail to take my next scheduled dose at the appointed time, my pelvic pain wil begin to re-emerge 1-2 hours thereafter.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Neurontin (gabapentin) Astonishing pain relief so far!!

Hey tractor, there's a group of drugs originally approved for their anti-convulsant properties which have since been found to have value in treating symptoms of depression and bipolar which don't respond satisfactorily to anti-depressants alone. These meds include Depakote, Trileptal and the anticonvulsant I just started taking - Neurontin.tractor316 wrote:when you say anti convulsant do you mean anti depressant or is this something different ? Otherwise I'm glad its working for you . So far no real side effects?
What is interesting about Neurontin is that it has recently been approved to treat nerve pain (neuropathy) brought on by diabetes. This kind of pain is frequently described as haveing a subjective 'electric shock' component. I have no professional expertise in the pharmacology, but I cannot help but think that this sort of chronic pelvic pain and maybe others, can be treated successfully with Neurontin.
