A Link to Fatigue in CPPS?

4.2 Neurotoxin Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

News for IC Patients who also suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The National CFIDS Foundation, based in Needham, Massachusetts, recently announced that research sponsored by their Foundation was formally presented at the International Symposium on Toxins and Natural Products in Okinawa, Japan on November 17-19. Researchers have discovered a potent neurotoxin in the blood of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFIDS) patients. The neurotoxin, known as ciguatoxin, is a potent, heat stabile, non-protein, lipophilic sodium channel activator toxin, and is one of the most potent biological toxins known. Ciguatoxins produce dramatic neurological manifestations, such as peripheral sensory or motor symptoms (including paresthesias, pain, burning, tingling, numbness), central nervous system symptoms such as headache, autonomic dysfunction and also affect multiple body systems (gastrointestinal, immune, hepatic, cardiovascular) and the muscles.

Many CFIDS patients in the study had higher levels of the toxin than the patients with cancer, hepatitis or acute ciguatera poisoning.
