Subject: Dr. Wise

Just read the 2014 letter by Dr. Wise. I am a few years younger than he but have a similar history with pelvic pain. I was "diagnosed" with prostatitis by a local urologist in 1994, at the age of 38. I was given a cystoscopy when antibiotics did not help, even though no causal organism had been defined. I suffered on and off until 2001 when, suffering from a chronic anxiety disorder, I was taught progressive muscle relaxation. I noticed that the practice also relieved my prostatitis symptoms, and they spontaneously remissed for nearly ten years. They recurred during a phase in my life when I was flying back and forth cross country to be with my ailing parents. This is when, with the wonders of Google, I discovered Dr. Wise's website. I watched his video and, with a bit of reading and my earlier work with progressive muscle relaxation, have been symptom free again. Just this summer I began to experience moderate to intense episodes of IBS.... after eliminating any serious physical causes (an exhaustive procedure involving several tests) I came to the conclusion that the condition is similar to my previous pelvic pain one.... with this in mind, I treated it in the same way... yoga, sphincter muscle relaxation (to the degree that this can be consciously done), anxiety reduction techniques. I also stopped (almost entirely) alcohol use (I believe this masks anxiety) and drink only one cup of coffee a day. While symptoms have not entirely remissed I would say I am at "2" instead of a "7" or "8" in terms of discomfort and anxiety. Drs Anderson and Wise are to be commended for their work. There is good alternative medicine and poor alternative medicine (if that is what it should even be called) and theirs is, in my opinion, very good. Thanks for your time, MAA
