simple postural tips to help pain/discomfort

Post by feanor777 »

So I was looking for a physical therapist here in Miami, FL and I came across this guys website: http://www.neuromusculartherapyassociat ... fault.html
Now I am not endorsing him, because I have not been to him or heard from anyone about him BUT, on his website there is this 'Education' section with small tips that I believe can help a lot (recreated here with numbers for reference):

Postural/Daily Rules to Remember:
1. Stand symmetrically (weight of the body on both feet)
2. Don’t cross your legs or ankles when sitting
3. Keep both feet flat on the floor when sitting
4. Don’t sit on the edge of your seat; slide back on the chair
5. Sit upright (your ear should be parallel with your shoulder
6. Read or watch TV in a reclined or upright position
7. Keep your computer monitor and keyboard in front of you
8. Make sure that monitor is above eye level so head does not flex
9. Sleep on your back if possible
10. If you sleep on your side, keep top leg behind bottom leg
11. Keep pillow touching the trapezius muscle when sleeping on side
12. When getting out of bed, roll on your side and push off with elbow/hand
13. Drive with both hands (hold the wheel at the bottom for better posture)
14. When driving, keep left leg stretched out and on foot support
15. Keep right foot straight and not turned out when you are driving
16. Bring objects closer to you before lifting them
17. Use your thighs and legs to lift up an object
18. Avoid lifting your arms more than 90 degrees repetitively to avoid injury
19. When carrying objects, keep them close to your center of gravity
20. Bend your knees when picking objects off the floor
21. When rotating, pivot but don’t twist your torso nor your body
22. Remove objects (wallets) from the back pockets of pants or jeans
23. Wear loose-fitting clothes so circulation does not decrease nor stagnate
24. Stretch daily, holding the stretch for 3 seconds and repeating it 10 times
25. Drink 6-8 ounces of water daily to help your body’s metabolism
26. Make it a habit to become aware of your body posture so that it changes your pain cycles or patterns

I am especially paying attention to 1-8, since I am guilty of sitting wrong and a lot of pain comes from that. The ones about sleeping (9-12) I am going to try as well. Also, 13-15 have to do with driving, which I know I have been doing wrong (especially about not turning the right foot out). I tried it today and the pain seemed much better. Hope this helps some people.
