Newbie (Pete123's Case)
Hi folks, I'm new here and was just seeking some advice. I am 37 and about eight weeks ago I developed a lower UTI with discharge and was given a single dose of antibiotics for NSU. However, I had terrible penile pain, and went back to the GP. They tried to culture my urine, after the antibiotics were given, and unsurprisingly found nothing. They started me on 7 days of doxycyline, and things improved. Once I finished the course, the pain returned, and my symptoms got very odd. I had burning in my penis and groin, and the skin on my abdomen was sensitive to touch. I couldn't tolerate my underwear touching my skin there. I felt pins and needles in my abdomen and penis, and on one occasion, burning in my feet. They put me back on doxy, and things seem to improve, but they returned badly, with severe penis pain a week later. They thought I had a bladder infection and gave me augmentin, which didn't seem to help. My penis became sore around the base, and I felt very uncomfortable. I'm now on doxy, trimethoprim, and opiates for the pain. I have seen a urologist and they suggested CPPS. My prostate on exam was found to be enlarged, but not tender. All of this has been very scary, and has had an affect on my mental health (prior to this I was fit and healthy, as far as I knew). Any thoughts? I have been to the GUM clinic and all tests were negative. I am worried this might be some strange herpes infection, but I have never had any blisters or sores. The head of my penis has gone red on occasion when I have pain, and I can see some slight red marks, but this goes away in a few hours or so.
Thanks for any advice in advance. P.

Re: Newbie
First of all, welcome. Your symptoms are all normal for CPPS. We've seen them mentioned here many times.
- UTI trigger
- Penile pain
- Skin hypersensitivity
- Heat sensations in lower limbs (crosstalk)
- Temporarily helped by anti-inflammatory effects of antibiotics
- Mental health deterioration
- Skin colour changes on glans (crosstalk)
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Re: Newbie
Thanks webslave! I have been feeling really scared and worried, and this has really got me down. I have been having some odd symptoms over the last few years, which I was able to ignore because they were not particularly painful (some frequency and dribbling, for example). Have also felt "uncomfortable" down there, but nothing brutally painful, and this has occurred infrequently, so again, ignored it. This happened at a time of marked stress in my family, when we thought someone was going to die. I can only assume the stress brought it on full wack.

Re: Newbie
Incidence of the condition is typically associated with a period of severe stress.

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Re: Newbie
Thanks Carld. I am slowly coming to terms with this, but am scared that I have some sort of atypical herpes infection that has caused 8-9 weeks of pain. However, with no blisters or sores and such weird symptoms, I find myself thinking this is not possible. What set me down this track is one of the first doctors I saw said it could be viral, which sent me heart racing, and my anxiety through the roof. Reading the internet hasn't helped either. I am hoping I am wrong and things will improve. I started taking any accredited quercetin product and over the counter pain killers and had a successful go at prostate massage. Which oddly, seemed to help a little. Thanks P.

Re: Newbie
Just thought to add - I received my results for a IgG herpes antibody test today. Negative for both HSV 1 and 2. I guess I am formally in the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome club. At least my anxiety has decreased. Pete

Re: Newbie
My case started in 2008. I thought I would never get better, and it took almost 2 years, but I am 90-95% and holding for a year. Urologists were a waste of time and money. Zyflamend, Fish oil, stretching, relaxation, and limiting sex to 3-4 times per week has done it. Good luck
Age: 52 | Onset Age: 52 | Symptoms: fairly constant groin "burning", not really related to urination (it feels better after I do it), some post ejaculation soreness.Helped By: hot baths, relaxation, Xanax | Worsened By: too many orgasms, anything but really gentle sex, driving and other stressful activities. Tried: Multiple antibiotic, although I never went more than 2 weeks on any particular one. Did I need 4 to six weeks on Cipro, for example? Prosta Q, PEENUTS, experimenting with Chinese herbs now. Suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks for the advice tascam. Might give Zyflamend a try. Pete

prednisolone
I did a search for this, and noticed a few guys have found no benefit, while others have found benefit. Anyone else tried this? My GP started me on this today, and I was curious about how others might have faired on this medication? Pete

Re: prednisolone
I wouldn't advise using it. It's like using a hammer to kill a fly. Granted, this condition feels terribly serious, and it is in terms of quality of life, but it's trivial from a purely medical point of view. Immunosuppressive drugs are some of the most powerful (and potentially damaging) tools doctors have at their disposal, and are not to be used lightly. That's my opinion, but others may see it differently.

Re: prednisolone
I suggested to my doctor because I suppose I am rather desperate. My symptoms have been improving - I have started Quercetin, trying the broccoli method, garlic tabs, zinc, vit C, cranberry tablets, l-carnitine (which I had taken before when trying to conceive), cranberry juice, and am still on the antibiotics (urologist is convinced I should finish them), and pregablin. Also trying trigger point release, and prostate massage. Now trying prednisolone from today. The burning and inflamed feelings continue, plus this pinching feeling within my urethra, within the glans, and sometimes just underneath it. The odd thing is...everyone tells me my prostate feels normal, but one doctor suggested it was enlarged. Go figure. However, things certainly aren't right. I can't help but think that my symptoms were caused by a poorly treated lower UTI, which spread up my urinary tract, based on how my symptoms all started. Pete
