Clonazepam - burning pain

Post by gmccormack »

I know men here take Clonazepam and even Dr Wise recommends it when your flares are out of control.

I take this drug frequently on and off at 0.5 mg and it really cuts the pain level down about 50-75%. Anyways, I had wondered why this helps so much and was sick of hearing "it helps because your so anxious and that turns down the pain", in my case that is ridiculous.

My penis tip is physically red and burns after voiding, I have burning in my urethra (mild these days), and burning inside of thighs and scrotum. My pain is generally burning.

I found this excerpt from Google Books:
Bouckoms AJ, Litman RE: Clonazepam in the treatment of neuralgic pain syndrome. Psychosomatics 26:933-936, 1985
2

Although in general inappropriate to use benzodiazepines for {chronic pain,} an article from Broukms and Litman; from Harvard described the efficacious use of Clonazepam for the treatment of a "burning pain" type pain. Clonazepam is a benzodiazepam with a high degree of GABA -ergic activity and less activity on the benzodiazepine and glycerine receptors
This may explain why others and myself get such pain relief. I haven't delved into GABA-ergic activity alternatives but it may be the only one. I know we still don't fully understand how benzo's even work.

I do know when I take Clonazepam the redness on my penis tip goes away, my dysuria goes away along with burning inner thighs (allegedly neuropathic in nature I assume) and I'm left with a sore right testicle, which the clonazepam does not seem to affect.

Another thing is that Clonazepam may be beneficial for neuropathic pain and myofascial pain syndrome.

Thanks for the feedback. Clonazepam does appear effective in the treatment of nerve pain with a burning quality.

Comparison of treatment modalities in burning mouth syndrome
Barker KE, Batstone MD, Savage NW.
Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland, Brisbane QLD.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by a spontaneous burning pain in the oral mucosa without known organic cause or standardized treatment. The aims of this study were to assess and compare the efficacy of clonazepam and diazepam in relieving the symptoms associated with BMS and evaluate for which patients this treatment might be effective by correlating treatment efficacy with underlying psychological status.

METHODS: The medical records of BMS patients attending an oral medicine private practice (1999-2004) were reviewed. The patients were then contacted and asked to complete a short questionnaire regarding their response to diazepam/clonazepam drug therapies. A second group of patients attending the above clinic (n = 30) were asked to fill out a hospital anxiety and depression assessment form in an attempt to correlate treatment success with underlying psychological status.

RESULTS: A total of 71.4 per cent of patients treated with clonazepam had partial or complete resolution of their oral symptoms, while 55.1 per cent of patients treated with diazepam had improvement of their oral symptoms. There was no correlation between underlying anxiety or depression and efficacy of benzodiazepine medication.

CONCLUSIONS: A greater percentage of patients taking clonazepam reported either partial or complete relief of symptoms compared to diazepam. However, the differences were not statistically significant. There was no correlation found between underlying psychopathology and treatment success with benzodiazepines.

I take Clonazepam for a different reason, but I can't say that it has presented any particularly disturbing side-effects. Of course, everyone is different in how that goes.
I am not a physician. This is not medical advice. Consult your doctor!

That's great! Clonazepam (Klonopin) and other benzodiazepines are similarly useful for me (see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=6536 ). Be aware that you may develop a tolerance, as discussed on other threads about benzos. The key is to use them infrequently (how infrequent depends on how quickly you develop a tolerance).
Age: 36 | Onset Age: 29 (Summer 2005) Main Symptoms (all intermittent): penile/anal/rectal/perineum pain/numbness/tingling/coldness, LUTS, ED | Helped By: duloxetine (Cymbalta), topical benzocaine, occasional benzodiazepines, hot weather, hot baths, understanding friends & family, pushing myself to be more sociable and active, psychotherapy (mostly CBT), diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation, meditation (concentration and mindfulness), adequate sleep | Worsened By: cold weather, stress, inadequate sleep, prolonged sitting or standing in place, walking uphill, heavy exercise, erection/ejaculation (sometimes)
Last But Not Least: I am not a medical/health professional of any kind. This is not medical advice.
