Hey guys,
This is sort of an arbitrary question, but for those of you who have had cysto's before, how long does it take for stop burning when voiding?
The resting (non voiding) irritation has gone but it's pretty vicious when I void and I'm getting some slight blood as well. It's been 40 hrs so I understand this is normal but just wanted to know.

Re: cystoscopy
The post-cystoscopy urinary pain is quite common. "Pissing razorblades" is the term I often hear used, in fact.
If you feel that your pain is above a reasonable level, then I would consider giving your urologist a call. I don't know whether the blood is a concern (to say otherwise would be a layman's guess), but there are things to be done for the discomfort. Pyridium is often prescribed to assist with pain related to cystoscopy, as it acts as an anesthetic for the urinary tract. As a fun bonus, it also turns your pee bright orange.

Age: 26 Onset Age: 17 Symptoms: Shooting, nerve-like pains throughout the penis, which abruptly hit and leave. Testicular pain, perineum pain, burning/irritative urination, extended pain after ejaculation. Occasionally, some allodynia or ache in the coccyx/sacrum/thigh/buttocks/legs. Diagnosis: Pelvic floor dysfunction, degenerated lumbar disk, and mildly herniated lumbar disk. Helped By: Physical therapy, pain management doctor, hot baths, therapy pool, stretching regimen, breathing exercises, relaxation, distraction. Worsened By: Arousal/ejaculation (worst), constipation, panicking/obsessing, other triggers depend upon current symptoms. Tests/Prior Treatments: Too many antibiotics to count, multiple urine tests (all normal), testicular ultrasound (normal), bladder and renal ultrasound (normal), lumbar and pelvic MRI with and w/o contrast (revealed disk problems), Elavil 25mg (caused retention), Flomax 0.4mg.

Re: cystoscopy
thanks Jay and Silas, I called about the Pyridium, I saw that being prescribed as well. The razorblade pain is a pretty accurate description and the blood I know is common, its all just from the instrumentation. Pfizer was adament I get this for the trial, I tried to refuse but they weren't having it, they did not want anyone with something grossly wrong, sort of like the screening Dr Anderson and Smith do for the WA protocol.
Jay, are you still interested in getting a nerve block?

Still a good chance that I will go through with the caudal epidural, but it will depend heavily upon the outcome of my SSI hearing. That should be coming up ... well, sometime soon. Getting to a year from their initial acknowledgment of my request for a hearing, which is the limit for them to set a date.gmccormack wrote:Jay, are you still interested in getting a nerve block?
Until then, just taking it day by day. All you can do. :)

Re: cystoscopy
So your on disability for this condition? That's tough man, sorry to hear that. I thought you just didn't have insurance. Glad to hear your taking it day by day, very hard to look into the future with what life will be like if we have this forever, something they stressed not doing at the WA clinic.
I have my own opinion after my hypogastric, it relieved pain for 4 hours and then returned back to baseline. Because it did work albeit transiently, the anesthesiologist claims the pain is visceral. How do you treat visceral pain? no one really knows.
I know you had said you were doing it for pain relief not for diagnostic measure but I can't imagine how the pain relief will last longer than a few hours with Marcaine as the anesthetic, it wears off in short order. So I was in the OR for 2 hours with 2 drs and 2 fellowships and 3 nurses, I came out with 4 hours relief, unlikely I will get another one. But someone in such constant pain for your maybe the 4 hours will be worth it, you can sit essentially pain free and think about how life was ....probably not psychologically a good idea though.

Re: cystoscopy
There is absolutely no way of telling the outcome of the caudal epidural. It may last minutes, months, or do nothing at all. The caudal will bathe all nerves in the pelvis, so yes, it's more for pain relief than diagnostics. Same thing they do to women giving birth. Marcaine lasts longer than lidocaine, by the way, but the hope for extended relief comes with the steroids. If that is achieved, the plan is for me to then return to physical therapy. Of course, none of it matters if I don't get SSI to cover the bill.
Truthfully, I have come to terms with this psychologically. I make only brief visits to the boards anymore, to address what posts I can, and I otherwise carry on with what I am able to do. Not fixating upon it or chasing a cure has helped me a lot. What will be, will be.

Jay,
Good for you man, I commend anyone that can come to terms with chronic pain, mentally you have to be extremely strong.
I am aware Marcaine lasts longer that's why I got it and mentioned it. I didn't know they were going to use steroids.
Good luck with the SSI hearing
