Alcohol and Muscle Relaxation

Post by painagain »

Alcohol is a muscle relaxer. We all know this. In a car accident, those who have been drinking tend to fare better than those who have not because the alcohol has relaxed their muscles so they are not tensed up. Why then do so many chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome sufferer's report that alcohol makes their symptoms worse? Is it because the tensed pelvic muscles have caused inflammation in the bladder, and alcohol is a bladder irritant? I can't tell if alcohol helps, hurts, or has no effect on my pain. I guess it would just seem logical to me that alcohol would help heal us if chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome is related to tensed up muscles that need to be relaxed.

This alcohol issue is a tough one...everyone is different. Beer seems to be the biggest issue from past posters. Could be the wheat gluten connection. It seems for me Red Wine and Vodka are OK.

I think Graeme hit it on the head though...

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

That's a good question, PA. Alcohol affects the central nervous system (CNS), and my guess is that worsening of symptoms (at least for some of us) happens (at least partly) at the CNS level. For me personally, when I consume alcohol my symptoms get worse long before it reaches my bladder. And then there are also some guys on the board who have reported some relief with alcohol! Go figure. It certainly is perplexing...
Age: 36 | Onset Age: 29 (Summer 2005) Main Symptoms (all intermittent): penile/anal/rectal/perineum pain/numbness/tingling/coldness, LUTS, ED | Helped By: duloxetine (Cymbalta), topical benzocaine, occasional benzodiazepines, hot weather, hot baths, understanding friends & family, pushing myself to be more sociable and active, psychotherapy (mostly CBT), diaphragmatic breathing, relaxation, meditation (concentration and mindfulness), adequate sleep | Worsened By: cold weather, stress, inadequate sleep, prolonged sitting or standing in place, walking uphill, heavy exercise, erection/ejaculation (sometimes)
Last But Not Least: I am not a medical/health professional of any kind. This is not medical advice.

Alcohol increases urination. Generally, alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urination and flushes water from the body. The more alcohol you drink, the more water your body loses. This is because when alcohol is consumed, it enters the bloodstream and causes the pituitary gland in the brain to block the creation of vasopressin (also known as the antidiuretic hormone). Without this chemical, the kidneys send water directly to the bladder instead of reabsorbing it into the body. This is why drinkers have to make frequent trips to the bathroom after urinating for the first time after drinking. According to studies, drinking about 250ml of an alcoholic beverage causes the body to expel 800-1000ml of water; that's four times as much liquid lost as gained. This diuretic effect decreases as the alcohol in the bloodstream decreases, but the after-effects help create a hangover.
The above used to happen to me when I drank, but now it seems the last few times I've had a few drinks(I don't drink much at all anymore) I haven't had to go much during my drinking which I find quite odd. Last night I had a couple beers and a Mike's hard lemonade so three drinks starting at about 8:30 - 11 or so. I did not go to the bathroom until I got home around midnight and I did not really have to go badly then. Now, the next day(today) I've had to go 5 times from 6AM - 4P and I've just drank normal fluids nothing extra.
Age: 40 | Onset Age: 39 First | Symptoms: Frequent Urination. Feeling of having to go soon after going. Irritation in the penis. Current | Symptoms: Occasional frequency. Irritation at base of penis/subrapubic area. Dull, but more widespread pain in whole pelvic area at times. Post-urinary dribbling. | Helped By: Relaxing. Walking sometimes helps. | Worsened By: Sitting at work. Driving. Bowel Movement. Stressing about it.
