Advice on nerve pain

Post by scotcan »

Hi, Just looking for some advice from people more experienced than myself. I attempted to work on a (suspected) trigger point, before seeing a PT, in the psoas or lliacus muscle on the right side. It felt like a small pea and was painful to touch (not the same on opposite side, so I assumed it was trigger point.

I pressed into the area and tried to massage the length of the muscle for a few minutes and that was it. After a couple of days I began experiencing a shooting nerve pain in my right hip/groin whenever I touched the area or rotated my hip. I left it a couple of days to see if it would calm down but it hasn't. It's still the same with the same intensity!

Is this normal? Has anyone experienced something similar before? I'm just a bit wary I have damaged the nerve permanantly!

Any help/advice would be appreciated.
Age: 43 | Onset Age: 33 | Symptoms: Burning in urethra and tip of penis at meatus. Lower back pain and occasional dull ache in groin & testicles. Pain in coccyx and left side buttock when sitting | Medication: Quercetin 1000mg, Omega 3, Turmeric 1500mg, Shilajit Extract 400mg, Ashwagandha 920mg, Glucosamine/Condroitin | Helped By: stretching, rest, light exercise, sitz baths | Worsened By: sitting for long periods of time, driving, stressful situations | Comments: I'm 90% better and don't experience much burning anymore, but get the occasional flare. My main problem now is the sitting pain, which can be quite debilitating at times. I'm sure it's something to do with the exercises & stretching I've been doing as I didn't have this problem a year ago!

Too difficult to say from your vague description. There is even a bursa under the psoas that can become inflamed ...

This is definitely not bursitis, as there is no swelling and the area is not red or warm to touch.

I'm not the best with anatomy (had to look up bursitis lol), but the best I can describe the pain is that it comes from the right corner of my hip, at the waist line (just above my trouser pocket), and shoots diagonally down towards and into my groin area. The pain happens if I touch or press the area where it originates, or if I twist my hip - Sometimes when I walk as well. It definitely feels like a nerve pain!

Hi there,

I'm not a doctor, but I doubt that you permanently damaged a nerve. You might have zinged one, but the sort of damage you're concerned about isn't that easy to inflict. Certainly not with the relatively light pressure one would use to treat a trigger point.

I'd consult your PT or GP if it continues to be bothersome.
I am not a physician. This is not medical advice. Consult your doctor!

Age: 26 Onset Age: 17 Symptoms: Shooting, nerve-like pains throughout the penis, which abruptly hit and leave. Testicular pain, perineum pain, burning/irritative urination, extended pain after ejaculation. Occasionally, some allodynia or ache in the coccyx/sacrum/thigh/buttocks/legs. Diagnosis: Pelvic floor dysfunction, degenerated lumbar disk, and mildly herniated lumbar disk. Helped By: Physical therapy, pain management doctor, hot baths, therapy pool, stretching regimen, breathing exercises, relaxation, distraction. Worsened By: Arousal/ejaculation (worst), constipation, panicking/obsessing, other triggers depend upon current symptoms. Tests/Prior Treatments: Too many antibiotics to count, multiple urine tests (all normal), testicular ultrasound (normal), bladder and renal ultrasound (normal), lumbar and pelvic MRI with and w/o contrast (revealed disk problems), Elavil 25mg (caused retention), Flomax 0.4mg.

Also remember you have to be careful pressing near bones (like the pelvis) because nerves cross these areas and it's easy to trap a nerve against a hard surface like a bone and damage it. It will recover, but nerves are notorious for taking a long time to recover from any trauma.

The one other possibility is that you have irritated a lymph node.

Thanks for the advice and informations guys, I still have some pain there but it has subsided since I posted. It looks like I have irritated a nerve and it is taking a while to calm down.

I'm going to see a PT next week so will ask her about it. And I won't be trying to work on any TP's myself until I get some training!

Cheers again
