Insomnia, Elavil, reduced sex drive (Garyf's Case)
Hi I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with levator muscle spasm in about 1990. I have had 2 rounds of EGS treatment over the years....during the day I am able to deal with the symptoms..but they don't let me sleep....my symptoms are mostly rectal pain and tightness....at night it either hurts or won't let me drop off to sleep..i do hot baths, heating pads and advil but I am still up a good three night per week..it's 3am now....i also run about three miles a day on a treadmil and study tae kwon do......i have read the book and do some of my own manual stimulation of the muscle but I am far from california..any tips would be appreciated..garyf

Watch the benzos! This can be real hard to kick as I'm sure you already know.
Think about hypnotics like lunesta, ambien to help you sleep. I'm not a doctor....

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I find melatonin much more effective than anything else when it comes to sleeping at night... 3mg's or 5mg's has helped me cut my anti-anxiety dosage in half and I expect to be off it soon...

Just for clarification, what does the spasm feel like if it doesn't hurt? Like you, I would describe most of my discomfort as rectal. When I get spasms, which happens occasionally after an orgasm, it definitely hurts. (But everybody is different.) Is it just a feeling of pressure?
If it doesn't hurt, maybe it's worry that's keeping you up at night instead of the spasm. Just a thought . . .

Age: 29. Onset: 28 (June 2006). Pain in pelvis between scrotum and anus. Burning sensation in urethra. Sometimes urethra is inflamed. Quercetin helps a lot, as does heat.
thanks plato..it feels tight...the problem is that I cannot get comfortable so I toss and turn and thus no sleep...i agree with u about the worry part but this keeps me up even with ambien which I have tried for a few weeks about a year ago......to be more specific the feeling makes it torture to lay still....not sure what else to say but it is like I tighness that won't let go...sometime ejaculation helps...once the muscle lets go I fall asleep but it often wakes me back up a few ours later

muscle spasm and insomnia
hey guys.....i have been living with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome for years...when I try to sleep I feel what I would call a muscle tremor in the rectum....if this is bad I can't get comfortable and I toss and turn...this hasn't happened in a while....but even if it's mild it feels like it just won't let me drop off to sleep.....i have tried ambien but this makes it worse......i feel more tired and ready for sleep but the tremor still will not let me drop off.....sometimes ejaculation helps......and it's like I can feel the muscles all loosen up......but other times the spasms come back within an hour...any suggestions

You need some internal work to release that chronically tense area. Its spasming when you sleep I believe because you are finally starting to relax after all day, but the muscle doesnt want to relax, it wants to maintain is chronically tense position.
Masturbation helps because it tires the muscle in my opinion allowing it to go into that relaxed state, only to be tensed up when you start your day all over again.
I would seek out an experienced PT.

Ss

Re: muscle spasm and insomnia
This is one of the most classical signs of CP/CPPS. The "tic" shows that the muscles fibres are hyper-irritable and dysfunctional. This forum will definitely help you, keep reading!garyf wrote:when I try to sleep I feel what I would call a muscle tremor in the rectum....
