From http://www.ichelp.com:

ICOS Corporation of Bothell, Washington, has begun a multicenter clinical trial in the US to study resiniferatoxin (RTX) as a treatment for interstitial cystitis. RTX is an investigational substance that is being evaluated as a potential tratment to reduce the symptoms of interstitial cystitis when instilled into the bladder.

RTX belongs to a class of medications commonly referred to as vanilloids. When placed directly into the bladder, RTX is believed to "deaden" the sensory nerve fibers of the bladder that contribute to bladder pain, urgency, and frequency in patients with interstitial cystitis. A preliminary Italian study of 18 patients with bladder hypersensitivity compared RTX with placebo and suggests that RTX may be of benefit in patients with interstitial cystitis (Lazzeri M et al, 2000).

The use of RTX is presently restricted to investigative use in FDA-regulated clinical trials only and is not commercially available.
