FDA Warning: Cipro May Rupture Tendons
Agency Issues 'Black Box' Warning for Antibiotics Known as Fluroquinolones
By Todd Zwillich
WebMD Health News

July 8, 2008 -- Federal regulators are ordering new warnings on Cipro and similar antibiotics because of increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture.

The new warnings apply to fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics that includes the popular drug Cipro. The FDA has told companies that the drugs must now carry "black box" warnings alerting doctors and patients that the drugs can increase risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in some patients.

Fluoroquinolones have carried similar warnings for years, but officials say they continue to receive reports of safety problems. A "black box" warning is the FDA's sternest warning.

"We have seen continuing reports of tendon rupture so we are trying to increase awareness," says Edward Cox, MD, director of the FDA's Office of Antimicrobial Products.

Take a problem like pelvic pain, which seems to affect the tendons connecting the leg adductors hamstrings, obturators etc to the pelvis and hip and dump this on on top. No wonder some patients went mental or got much worse. I think one member here felt his arms were going to burn off while on it for a short time. I'm not sure but chronic "prostatitis" and other supposed urinary tract stuff may be the one of the few maladies where one may be on Cipro or any antibiotic for a long time. Perhaps tuberculosis but rarer and not as long.

I saw this article posted on a political board I read, and I was actually headed here to post it!

Not at all surprising to me about the Cipro warning. When I got really bad a few months ago, my urologist had me on a course of Cipro. Toward the end of it, the areas about my tendons were awfully sore. I should probably be thankful that I'm not the athletic sort, or I might have pushed things too far.
I am not a physician. This is not medical advice. Consult your doctor!

I had surgery to repair my Achilles tendon last September and right around when I had my initial bout of frequent urination which started this whole thing, I was given Levaquin (a fluoroquinolone) for what the doctor thought was pleurisy around my ribcage(I had been having pains in that area when I took deep breaths). I read the warnings about tendon rupture with this and had a lot of worry about taking this because I had just had a ruptured tendon repaired! I actually called the surgeon after hours asking him about it. He didn't seem to know anything about the risk, but he assured me he hadn't heard of a rupture caused by those pills.

After taking the pills that weekend is when I had my first penis irritation which I had not had up to that point. I actually was kind of freaking out while on those pills one night. My sleep also got crazy with very intense dreams. My sleep really hasn't been quite the same since that period, although better the last few months. I don't know if it was just stress causing it or if the Levaquin had something to do with it. Luckily, I was only on it for 5 days, but they were pretty large pills. I never had tendon issues thankfully, and my Achilles has since pretty much healed, but I vowed not to take those again.
Age: 40 | Onset Age: 39 First | Symptoms: Frequent Urination. Feeling of having to go soon after going. Irritation in the penis. Current | Symptoms: Occasional frequency. Irritation at base of penis/subrapubic area. Dull, but more widespread pain in whole pelvic area at times. Post-urinary dribbling. | Helped By: Relaxing. Walking sometimes helps. | Worsened By: Sitting at work. Driving. Bowel Movement. Stressing about it.

My urologist had me on fluoroquinolones for 8 months back in 2004 before I really understood what really caused CPPS!!!!! Lucky for me that I did not have any side effects while I was on them. Live and learn, my friends, live and learn!

It was after 3 days of Cipro for a groin infection (skin near crease) that I came down with CPPS. I ended up in the hospital with chest pains, flank pain, etc. Thought I was having a heart attack. They found nothing despite tests. Later, a PT examining me, found that my chest wall was filled with fluid - he surmised that the pain was due to my ribcage being separated from the underlying muscle due to fluid. He could actually feel the fluid in there "squish" when he pressed.

Cipro/Levaquin, etc should be trashed. There are other drugs they can use, just not as cheaply. Which unfortunately drives everything in American medicine these days. The only shining light here is that I've read that bugs that were once susceptible to Cipro are no longer so. So Cipro's days are prob numbered.

The irony for me is that to clear up the initial infection, the doc switched to erthromycin for a few weeks. No problems with it. Had I been given this safer drug for the infection, I doubt I would have come down with CPPS.
