Uroxatral expensive!

Post by BrettP »

Uroxatral is a very expensive medication without insurance. I went to the pharmacy today to pick up my prescription, they wanted $80 for one month!!! Since I ran out of the sample packs, i just bought it. I have insurance through medco, and the price there is $20/month, but I didn't realize how long it takes to get my prescription filled through the mail order. Guess next time I elect insurance benefits I will go for the premium prescription package! Hopefully they get a generic made soon so people won't have to pay so much if they dont have insurance. This has decreased both my urgency and frequency, and has seemed to help. However, I havent taken it in 4 days, and I'm still able to urinate, but it seems like the frequency factor is starting to kick up a notch, so I will be back on the uroxatral tonight...
Good to go!

Just curious here...I thought you stopped taking it?

As far as the irritative nature of our symptoms....Uroxatral will do nothing for that...At least for me. I also still had the sensation of having to pass urine soon after going while on Uroxatral..Why take an extra med....to find out if your emptying the bladder, next time you see your Uro...Have them do an ultrasound before you pee and after while not being on an Alpha blocker...If you retain normal amounts, then your wasting money and taking a drug you may not need...I'm not a doctor....

Cheers...

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I did stop for awhile, but then went back on it when I had the urgency and frequency crop back up. I don't feel like I'm passing a normal amount of urine. The uroxatral, in my eyes, desensitizes the urge, so that helps. When I did the uroflow, I wasn't retaining that much 19mls max, sometimes was actually at zero, however, when I was there at those times, I wasn't that symptomatic, its kind of a day by day thing. I also wonder if I'm dehydrated on some level which makes it seem like I'm not passing enough urine... I'm not too worried about it though, they ultrasounded my bladder, kidneys and prostate, all came back negative. Just that good ol' muscle tension...

The urgency frequency in my experience on uroxatrol for over a year did not stop...So for me alpha blockers were not the answer because the nerves in my prostate, bladder and muscles were or are agitated from pelvic myoneuropathy

I suggest you try Cardura, if you haven't already.
It worked PERFECT for me, removing ALL of my symptoms for over a year. I am currently off it, because I started to develop resistance.

I do not think an alpha blocker like Flomax or Uroxatral will do anything for frequency unless you have an enlarged prostate. These medications relax the bladder neck to allow urine to pass more freely.

As far as expense is concerened, there will be a generic for Flomax coming in 2010.

Hi Mpozatek

Have you tried these meds? How long have you suffered with frequent urination?

Gary,

Dealing with this for about 6 years. Have tried Flomax, initially thought it helped with urine flow but overtime it did nothing for the frequency or urinary/rectal discomfort.

Screw uroxatral. I'm DONE with uroxatral. I quit taking it two weeks ago, and have had ZERO decrease in urine flow. Just a waste of money down the tubes. . . ITs good if you need to sleep, but as far as continuing to take this medication, no mas. I realized that it doesn't help me at all, and there is no reason to continue a prescription that provides no benefit. I thought I would have problems when I stopped, but none, if anything, maybe I feel a bit better as it could have been screwing with my stream.
Good to go!
