What does Elavil do?
It seems that Elavil is used a lot for this condition. My mom who is a nurse said this was a very old drug that in the past was used to treat other conditions.
How does it fit into the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome world?

Re: What does Elavil do?
Do a search here and read up...For me it has worked for 2 reasons...Low dosage 5mg-10mg max....
It quiets the nerves and helps set up the environment for me to heal while I work the protocol.
It helps calm my anxiety so that this bennifits my muscles from being further stressed so I can calmly work my protcol and allows me to avoid a vicious cycle
You may bennifit because you have some similar symptoms to me. I have had the discomfort and irritation/burning. But not this other "pain" I have read about. But in the end, pain is pain...
Side effects....
Dry mouth/dry stools and possibly some retension that I have not been aware of because of the low dose I take. This could help with frequency issues, and I think it has helped me with that because it helps heal those nerves and it can relieve the sensation of having to go as well even after you just emptied your bladder.
At first you will feel fatigue which helps you sleep and then you will adjust. The side effects can be delt with by diet and plenty of water.
It's an old drug and at low dosage is very safe in my opinion...I support the use of it at low dosage only.

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Re: What does Elavil do?
Would I have to suggest that my Dr. give it to me or do they usually offer it?
Also - does it create constipation where you would need something like COLACE to help keep things moving.
It sounds like it might be helpful. But I wanted more info.
thanks.

Colace is fine but I would use http://www.konsyl.com konsyl natural fiber supplement bulk-forming laxative. 100% natural no sugar, glutin free. Works great.elitynski wrote:Would I have to suggest that my Dr. give it to me or do they usually offer it?

Just follow a healthy diet of fruits and veggies and so forth...Try a glutin free diet for a month as well. That has helped me as well.

Re: What does Elavil do?
Need to get a script for it from a doctor. Ask for 10 mg cut it in half for 5 mg and take before bed time for a few days. See how you do then go to 10 mg...

Inulin fiber is also very helpful for keeping constipation at bay. I mix some in with my apple juice every morning. No problems.

Re: What does Elavil do?
Hey Carl,
A question for you - I know Elavil and Tramadol together can have problems. I talked with 2 diff pharmacists and my doctor. All said it was ok at this dosage. Have you or any of the other Elavil users ever had any issues mixing the 2 ?
Thx

As far as other type meds like benzos...example I was taking .25 of Xanax for 2 months prior to starting the Elavil...I just stopped the Xanax and have not taken any Xanax since starting Elavil a little over year ago. So I do not know if there is any interaction with Tramadol/benzos like xanaz, valium and taking Elavil.

Re: What does Elavil do?
I just started taking this the other day. I have IC apparently. Its only been two days, but I notice a marked improvement in about 24hrs. The doctor said it would relax my bladder. I am also taking Atarax and Elmiron, but I was taking them for a month before this so I attribute the recent feeling good to the Elavil. Something I noticed, I can still have some symptoms but they dont self perpetuate. By this I mean, I might have pain levels that go from 2 to 0 at times that used to be 6 to 8 (2 doesn't climb all by itself up to 6). The pain would fluctuate throughout the day. Anyways, I hope it keeps working like it has, I have had a very good last couple of days. One other thing-I have cotton mouth like a SOB. I was thinking if my bladder is sensitive, the amount of water alone this stuff makes me drink has got to be good. Water never taste so good. I feel like Jim Carey in "you, me and Irene". I drink well over a gallon day on this stuff.
Age: 26 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: Used to be pain around the base of the penis, now I have golf ball in rectum feeling that can be very painful. | Helped By: kegal exercise/biofeedback (fixed ejaculation pain), antiinflamatory drugs, warm baths (intermediate term relief), hamstring stretching (very short term relief), the biggest being stress management | Worsened By: Stress, Standing for long periods, ejaculating used to make it worse, but not anymore

Re: What does Elavil do?
It can take a month or so for Elavil to have full effect so it's possible what you've felt is a bit of a placebo effect. Take it for 30 days and see how it goes. I take it, and it's very helpful. Just be careful of eating binges 'cause you can gain wait taking meds like this.

Re: What does Elavil do?
I have massive cotton mouth, so that can't be the placebo also. I would not be surprised if the benefits I am seeing is from me drinking over a gallon of water every day. It would dilute my urine which would be good for the mast cells. My urine has very little color in it now.

Re: What does Elavil do?
Everyone is different and I have to agree with you on this. I felt the positive effects right away with Elavil. I also felt the dry mouth as well. I still get the dry mouth, in the morning but like you, I drink water and that helps and the extra water helps dilute my urine so it's not as irritating and that's another benefit ...chrisjiujitsu wrote:I have massive cotton mouth, so that can't be the placebo also. Re: What does Elavil do?
My uro said that Elavil calms peripheral nerves, while my Lyrica calms more central trunk nerves. I wish I could remember the actual terms she used. The combination of Elavil and Lyrica has been a life saver for me, even with the side effects of weight gain, dry mouth and ED. I've cut the narcotics by more than half, and multiple daily bouts of breakthrough pain have mostly disappeared.
I am not a doctor too!
Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.
