using a foam roller

Post by mbaker »

I've had an issue with sore hamstrings in my right leg since the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome got started. The upper hamstring, and abductors can get really sore. I've had them dry needled extensively to no avail. I've massaged them myself, applied heat, ice, stretched in a hot tub, and so on. Nothing helped other than waiting it out until it subsided.

I talked with my new pelvic floor PT about it, and she walked around me and started pushing on my illiotibial (IT) band on the outer part of my leg - which didn't hurt by the way. She got some massage grease and spent a few short minutes going up and down the muscle. It hurt quite a bit. When she finished, she asked me to check my hamstring. Badda bing. Pain was gone. I laid there sorta stunned. She said IT band tightness can cause hamstring pain like I had. Her prescription to me was to get some foam rollers and begin working them and other muscles at home. I ordered some online (they're pretty cheap) but they haven't arrived yet.

The other night my hamstring pain came back. My wife followed my instructions and did the same massage technique on the IT band. Couple of minutes later, pain in the hamstring was gone.

Might be something to look into if you have external muscle issues. You can google for "foam rollers" and find a lot of PT oriented sites including some videos that show how to use foam rollers to do self-PT.
