All:
A tip from my most excellent PT on properly relaxing the pelvic floor. It's easiest to do this standing BTW.
First, relax the abdomen. Let your belly hang loose - it'll probably go over your belt for most guys (;-). Once you've done this, then relax the anal area as though you were going to relieve yourself. She's had me practice this as she does the internal work and she can give me feedback on whether I'm doing it right. Turns out it's relatively easy if you remember to relax the abdomen first, pelvic area second.
She and I talked at length about it and she mentioned that there is a lot of overlap in the area of the abdomen and the pelvic area especially with the muscles. You have to relax both to really relax the pelvis.
I've had a tendency to tense my abdomen for years. At one pt in my life, I weighed more and it was a reaction to not making me look as big. Unfortunately, I deeply ingrained the habit and I'm now unlearning it. Now, when I'm out and about walking, etc I remember to check my abdomen and just walk about with it relaxed in whatever shape it appears. It makes keeping the pelvic floor relaxed possible.
Hope this helps others.

Basically it's the same thing as moment to moment relaxation that is talked about in A HEADACHE IN THE PELVIS. Very helpful to just relax those stomach muscles. I was always holding in my stomach since I was a kid. So It takes time to unlearn how to ride a bike.

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Yepper, I held in my abs and pulled up, not good.
I do this same relaxation and I also find it easier to do standing. Sitting I'm still struggling with it which isn't good since I sit all day. But, Ill stand in my office and do exactly what you explained.
Its basically just dropping the pelvis which is what happens when you use the bathroom.
Regards,
Ss

I do the same thing - sucking in the gut. Guess I started doing it as a kid due to my parents ripping on me for being overweight?
