checking in

Post by darin »

Hi all,
Thanks to this site, to Marilyn Freedman (a great NY-based PT, well-schooled in the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol), to SP stretching, and -- especially -- to the IF/TENS unit I've mentioned here before, I feel much better lately. (The TENS/IF unit is called Rehabilicare, and some insurances will cover it.) I'm also working with Dr. Robert Moldwin, who's quite good in this area. He has me on low doses of Elavil and Valium.

I still have urinary frequency/rurgency flare-ups now and again, though. I've thought about adding uroxatrol to my Elavil regimen. Any advice?

Hope you are all doing well.

Your protocol is very similar to mine. I'm on the low dosage of Elavil, 10mg and Uroxatral as well. This is a good one two punch.

I tried an experiment yesterday, I did not take any Uroxatral for over 24 hours and my stream was very much the same, I took my Elavil before bed. What I noticed was in the middle of the night I had some urine retension, which is one of the reason's I'm on the Elavil to slow down the frequency I get from the irritated prostate. So by not being on the uroxatral, the retension happened. So I got up and took my uroxatral and presto, urinated freely again with no problems.

So I think it's a good choice to be on Uroxatral. Just be careful in the beginning, only take it in the evening after dinner. You will adjust after a week or so on the drug if you decide to go for it. My main side effect from both of the drugs is fatigue but then again I work 10 hours a day every day 50 weeks a year play in 3 bands, have 2 little kids so I think that could add to the fatigue. Plus hard dry stools at times, so I try to up the fruits and veggies and fiber.

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Wow Darin, between Marilyn Freedman and Dr. Moldwin you must be spending a hell of a lot of "cashola!" A friend of mine use to see both of them and neither accept any medical insurance. Dr. Moldwin used to accept it, but he just stopped not too long ago. They are an excellent pair to use for recovery though, if you can afford it. Stay well and best of luck!!

Well, both my insurance pays for 70 percent of both Marilyn and Dr. Moldwin, so -- while I lay out a lot of money -- I do get reimbursed for a lot of it.

But those cash lay-outs do hurt. But, if you don't spend money on getting better, what else should you spend it on?
