exercise, are running and ab work ok

hey guys....i am new and suffer from mostly rectal pain and no urinary symptoms......a 45 minute run on the treadmill has been my exercise several times a week...along with tae kwon do class...these involve a lot of ab work....do these activities aggravate the pelvic floor......my days ore ok but I have a lot of trouble sleeping becuase of this

I've noticed that most forms of exercise seem to mess with my symptoms to some degree. I haven't gone running in forever.

If you want a way to get some good cardio in without irritating those tissues I'd suggest trying to locate an arm bike. That way you can sit down (I sit on one of those pelvis friendly cushions with the notch cut out where the perineum goes) and exercise to your heart's content without worrying about a flare-up. Swimming doesn't seem to be too strenuous either. You could also try walking.

yes most forms irritate me to some degree. But, I won't quit exercising--becoming out of shape would also be depressing.

Find what aggravates you the least. Walking and smimming bother me the least. But, I do light lifting followed by stretching and walking on treadmill.

I dont however do any more direct ab work. My abs have Trps so that would be wise.

thanks guys.....i may try incline walking but I don't want to give up exercise......when u walk on the treadmill what speed to u go...i usually run between 4.5 and 5...not a full our run by any means.....don't really do much abs but for tae kwon do..i guess leg raises are also bad now that I think of it

When I walk I walk around 4.7 Ill run around 6 or better. But, not much more than that.

Leg lifts, yeah, those to me would be worse than crunches. Very stressful on the whole abdomen and running down the legs and pelvic floor. Id drop those.

As long as I stretch afterwards, I find I can run between 5-7 k's a few times a week and it doesn't worsen my symptoms.... without the stretching, everything clenches up......I also try to ease into my runs, going every slowly at first and then picking up a bit of speed as I go along... I've also stopped running outside in cold weather... don't know if this is helpful...

The stretches from HITP, including the V-stretch against the wall and a number of other leg and back stretches...

thanks.. I have been ok about the baths and moist heat but never that good with stretching ... I have the book and I will check it

I can't believe that there is actually other people going exactly through the same experiences with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome that I have gone through. The onset of my symptoms occurred 3 years ago after going on a cross-country trip on an All-terrain vehicle (ATV). On this trip my pelvic floor got smashed very bad. To make things worse, I spent the following days doing abs with weights until my first (and worse) flare-up started.

After almost a year of suffering I learned about this site and the relaxation techniques. Did those for a couple of weeks and my symptoms were gone. Now two years later being almost symptom-free, I started heavy exercise and, again, abs while pulling weights (about 110lbs). The next day the worst flare-up in 2 years occurred, and its been now almost a month that I have been dealing with it.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to ease my abs and pelvic muscles to ease recovery?

Why don't you try doing ab work without the weights. IMO it's not really necessary to have a good workout. You could do incline ab crunches or other stuff without adding extra weights.

Check out my messages from jan 26 and 27 under General Question. Dump the heavy exercise, and start over. Likely you would have flared anyway eventually doing bench presses or squats. You did it once which is good, now you know what to do again.
