Elavil question

Post by darin »

Hey all,

As I mentioned a while back, I've been doing better -- due, in large part, to this IF machine I got form my PT called Rehabilicare IF 3 wave. (I really recommend it for trigger points on the back, pubic bone, and butt.) Look into it as a way to supplement the SP, if you can. Some insurances cover it.

Anyway, in addition to all that, my doctor has perscribed me some Elavil to go along with my Valium. He's lowered the valium (with an eye toward getting me off of it). My problem is more frequency/urgency than burning -- at least since I've been doing the SP stretches. So maybe the machine won't help everybody. Anyway.....

As I also mentioned here, my wife and I are trying to conceive.

So I was told by my pharmacist that amitriptyline (Elavil) can cause inhibition of ejaculation; does anyone know if a low dose of Elavil would cause problems in that area?

The IntelliHealth website writes that certain psychiatric medications -- amitriptyline included -- can interfere with the function of nerves that control muscles involved in ejaculation. Would this cause retrograde ejaculation, and would that cause infertility because my sperm would be unable to reach my wife's uterus? I know you all aren't doctors. But I figured I'd give it a shot.

Gosh, the questions we ask here. Where else could we turn, if not for this site?

Thanks again, guys.

Yes, Elavil can cause RE, but you can test that out yourself by measuring if and how much ejaculate you produce.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

I have not experienced any RE from my 10 mg of Elavil. Nor have I noticed any decrease in volume. I do take Uroxatral and my over all volume has decreased from the Uroxatral, but not the Elavil. Hope that helps. As far as the frequency, I feel it is a hit or miss. Some days are better some days not.

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I quit taking it, but everything was normal - even at 50 mg.
Also bear in mind that the Elavil dose for depression starts at 75 mg, even up to 100-150 mg, which is where they base these lists of side effects on.
Elavil as a muscle relaxant is typically prescribed in 10-50mg doses.
If you stick to the lower doses, you'll be fine.
Give it a chance and if it's not for you then move on.

That's some good info Benzo. I was always wondering what the dose was for depression vs. what we use it for for prostatitis. Thank you...

You're welcome.
It's actually one of the oldest antidepressants around, from the tricyclic family. Then in the 80s, the SSRIs and SNRIs came along.
I had a really hard time quitting the Elavil though: got some serious withdrawal symptoms after having taken it for many years. After 7 years (started taking it in '99) I was finally able to quit. And that was even on a relatively low dose.

Did you slowly reduce the dosage and all that ? I'm asking because after 3.5 months on 10mg, I want to start backing off in a month.

If you want to taper off from 10mg, it's best to skip a day at first.
So take one on Monday, nothing on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, etc.
If that goes well, you can increase the intervals.
However, at 10mg for 3.5 months I wouldn't worry too much about withdrawal symptoms.
