Work poll - are you working?

Post by Rufus »

How many of us are working full time jobs?
I was working for 10 months with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome before a new VP to the company said I wasn't "happy" working at the firm.

Is it possible to cope with symptoms and work full time?

Has PT helped in developing coping mechanisms?
Age:37 | Onset Age: 35 | Symptoms: pain in testicles that comes and goes that also switches sides-trying to find a pattern as to "why" this happens/Rectal Burn at the 6 O'clock position at my anus which tends to flare around the periphery of my anus typically after defication but no perineum pain-no "golf ball" pain. Pain in testicles worsens as I sit but not always...Pain is not always present but depresses me. Pain used to be at a very high level but has subsided in time to a low level but has not gone away. Pain used to flare after sex but not as much as before although it still like playing russian roulette./
/Lack of SleepHelped By: I haven't found anything that has helped to my knowledge. Tried many many sessions of PT, accupuncture and chiropractic care but still have not found steady relief that takes me back to a pre CPPS state.

I added a poll to your question, Rufus.

It's an interesting question. I couldn't work when I was most sick, and it led to me changing my lifestyle completely.

I haven't worked in 9 months. I have chronic fatigue and brain fog on top of the pain.

Fortunately, I'm just able to sort of take early retirement, but this isn't how I planned to go out and it's been a blow personally, professionally and financially. I spent the last two years working part time as an independent consultant. The work was extremely demanding and paid really well. There is no way I could do it now and give my clients their money's worth.

I look forward to getting the pain under control so I don't have to take vicodin. I think that will help with the fatigue. Next month my wife is demanding we go gluten free, maybe that will help too. I'd love to get back to a real life.
I am not a doctor too!
Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.

I still work full time. I love what I do, so not working would make things more stressful, as would the financial hit. But I also suffered from a lot of anxiety being at work while in pain. It was hard to keep going, but I'm glad I did. There were days I had to take off, however.

Same here, work full-time and at some points really had to struggle through it. Many days spent just staring at the computer screen because I couldn't think straight, and also used vacation/sick days when I had to. Since chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome first hit me while in college, I delayed jumping into a full-time job after graduating until I knew I was ready. Sort of lost/quit my first job because I was in pain. I'm also thinking about switching careers to teaching where you get plenty of time off and use that to focus on getting well.

It is interesting to note, this poll shows the majority of members here do work full-time, yet I speak to a therapist who works with several chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome sufferers and she knows of many men who are unable to work, that I'm somewhat of an exception for her.
Age:33 | Onset Age: 21 | Symptoms: Penile/rectal/testicular pain, urgency/frequency, constipation | Helped By: Relaxation, PT, eating healthy, just started some acupuncture-seems to be helping | Worsened By: stress/anxiety, poor diet

I work in an office. Symptoms arent really any worse at work. In fact they're worse in my second job in the pub which I enjoy a lot but I think causes me pain du e to a history of social phobia!
Age: 29 | Onset Age: 26 | Symptoms: initially severe burning throughout pelvis - much better; muscles spasms all over region, back pain, chronic IBS (much better) | Helped By: Psychotherapy, SP stretches, swimming, accepting the condition (understanding there is treatment); stress/anxiety management; possibly basic quercetin; valerian root, vit B & calc & magn supplements; gluten avoidance & especially dealing with chronic constipation. | Worsened By: stress / anxiety, too much sex; repressed emotions; personality goodist traits. 80% better

Social phobia is another anxiety spectrum disorder. As a group, we are far more subject to these disorders than normal people.

I work full time as well. Have to support my wife and 2 little ones. I do enjoy what I do, so I think it helps. I do think that no matter what we do, any work is going to have it's level of stress. Unless you win the lottery, keeping my finger's crossed  . I do notice that monday's are harder for me after being with my Family. I'm grateful I have a loving family, so I miss them and I notice that frequency kicks in and some discomfort, and lessons as I get near 5:30PM. Go figure...

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

I too work full time. I enjoy what I do in principle, but in practice it's possibly one of the most backward, frustrating environments I've worked in.
Richard

Age: 39. | Onset Age: 30. Onset Date: January 2002. Symptoms (back then): Supra-pubic pain, back pain, urinary frequency, urgency and difficulty, weak stream, nocturia, (and variously) chronic fatigue, IBS. Current symptoms: more frequent than normal, but pretty much under control. Current amelioration: Xatral 10mg, Mirtazapine 30mg. | Worsened By: Stress, binge drinking, strained bowel movements, bloating, sitting on hard surfaces, jogging, and regularly - THE WINTER!
