Should I Try an Antihistamine???
I'm in the midst of the worst flare-up of my life (please see my posts in the general discussion section)... I'm wondering if I should try an antihistamine and, if so, which one? I notice that most of the discussion items and posts are from a few years ago, so I don't know if antihistamines have fallen out of favour or if there is a newer one that CP sufferers have had success with... if someone could advise, it would be much appreciated.
44 years old. Chronic Prostatitis (onset age 38) for 6 years. In the midst of worst flare-up of my life. Tried all conventional methods without success. | Symptoms: Severe burning on tip of penis, burning between rectum and scrotum. Meds: Hytrin, Atavan, percocet (all at night). Natural Meds: Quercitin, Vitamin C and E and B Complex, Niacinimide, Salmon Oil, Garlic supplement, cranberry extract, concentrated liquid chlorophyll. | Helped By: warm baths, stretching, running. | Worsened By: not sure but suspect unhealthy eating, stress, negative thoughts.

If you are going to try one I would go with fexofenadine (Allegra). Make sure you get the one WITHOUT decongestant.
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes better: Stretching, Relaxing pelvic muscles, moment to moment relaxation, not sitting with legs crossed, Elavil, quercetin. Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

I take claritin w/o a decongestant. I just started this 3 weeks ago and it seems to be helping. Regards, Carl

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

Just out of curiosity, in what way do people find antihistamines work? Less pain? Less frequency? How???
Age: 33 | Onset Age: 32 Initial Symptoms: Frequent urination Current Symptoms: The odd feeling of frequency but not much else Helped By: Not thinking about it, hot bath, red wine, light exercise, Bowen technique seems to help, getting on with my life Worsened By: catastrophic thinking, worrying things will get worse, feeling depressed, reading websites too often! Work! Sitting in work all day isn't good!! Current Progress : Since 1st Sept 08, no pain!!! :)

This depends, antihistamines I think work on mast cells. Helps prevent the mast cells from degranulating and when thet do, they become more permeable and release nasty chemicals like histamine and others. So this can lead to inflammation and you have the many different symptoms of CP/CPPS. This is in theory I think. There is a lot of info on all this in pelvic myoneuropathy....Read on brother, read on....garyholc wrote:Just out of curiosity, in what way do people find antihistamines work? Less pain? God why did he have to make the human body so complicated???? I'm got to have a word with him when I meet him about why he put nerves in teeth. God obviously had a sense of humour when he designed the human body.

I think with CP/CPPS we all have to learn to laugh and have a sense of humor. I try and laugh at my condition any time I can. Puts things into perspective for me. I won't let this condition be a life sentence for me....garyholc wrote:God why did he have to make the human body so complicated???? I'm trying to view my problems in this area as a serious wake-up call that if I want a high quality-of-life for my "second half," I'm going to have to learn a few things that will benefit me in the long run... Relaxation, eating right, stretching, exercise...garyholc wrote:I'm got to have a word with him when I meet him about why he put nerves in teeth. I've only been suffering with what I believe to be chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome for a few months now, but in lots of other ways my body has been telling me for quite a while now that I need to take care of it. I do for a short time, but as soon as I "fall off the wagon" so to speak, something pops up.
Now, as if to say, "well, if you're not going to do this right, I'm giving you something 'chronic,'" the universe has decided to give me a sterner warning.
I hope I'll listen. :)
Age: 38 | Onset Age: 38 | Symptoms: urgency, perenial pain, sharp feeling of obstruction at base of urethra on occasion (am trying to resist urge to "test" this pain via Kegel contraction). Am 98% symptom free, with occasional minor flare ups. Helped By (currently treating with): Aleve (naproxen), Magnesium, Omega-3, Prosta-Q, daily pressure on external trigger points in groin, stretching, Klonopin helps but trying not to use it. | Worsened By: horrible seat at work, anxiety, Subway sandwiches?, constipation, other unknown factors...
