PT discovery

Post by lukesky »

Went to see a PT yesterday. She has experience working with pelvic pain. I'm the poster who had his rectum and colon removed due to ulcerative colitis back in the 80's. So, she could do no internal work but felt and pushed around on my scars on my stomach and then she pressed around down where my rectum used to be and in the perineum area. None of the pressing caused any pain, sensitivity or anything. She even stated that from pressing in the rectal area that no trigger points appeared to be present. No TP's in stomach area but a lot of scar tissue from where they did the surgeries. So, not sure of what all of that means. She asked if the pain felt "deep" up in side of me and I stated "no" It feels like it's right on the surface of my perineum. For instance when I bend over to pick up something while keeping my legs relatively straight I can feel a pulling like right on the surface of the perineum. Not sure what to make of it all. She stated that she would be willing to do some work on the scar tissue and see if that would be beneficial. Not sure whether or not to return to her.

Any thoughts

Luke

You mention you feel your perineum when you stretch your hamstrings by bending at the waist. This may be a key for you. What kind of daily stretching are you doing?
Age: 32 | Symptoms: Twingy pain/muscle spasms in groin area (gone), tingling sensation at tip of penis (has resolved as of now), urinary frequency (resolved as of now), thicker/decreased amount of semen (resolved as of now). Makes better: Stretching, Relaxing pelvic muscles, moment to moment relaxation, not sitting with legs crossed, Elavil, quercetin. Makes worse: Sitting, stress, more than one orgasm/day, constipation, manual labour

Following a post recently by Sleeper Service I've been doing Y stretches (that were recommended to him by Bill Taylor - Physiotherapist) - that is lying on my back against a wall with my legs vertical up the wall. You then lower your legs to the side (making a Y shape). This really caused a massive flare for me but I kept at it and, 4 weeks later, I'd say that the pain in my perineum has reduced by around 80% - massive progress for me as I've been struggling with my remaining perineum pain for months and months and months....

Highly recommended stretch - I lower my legs as far as they will go and hold them there for at least 5 minutes before bringing them together again. Do it every night. Hurt like hell at first, all the way down my leg, and didn't really feel like it was pulling or effecting my perineum that much but the difference it's made is superb :-D

Note that, just like you, my perineum pain felt on the surface.

Richard.

There is also a good yoga stretch called the " happy baby pose" I do this every day and I can feel my perineum stretch on the surface. Lay down on your back and bring your knees up to your chest hips width apart. Grab your feet from the outside of your feet and slightly pull the bottom of your feet twards you. Your arms are on the outside of your legs. Imagine doing a deep squat. It looks like a baby when they grab their feet when they are laying on their backs. I find this pose to be very helpful. Give it a try but do it carefully so you dont pull to hard and pull your groin muscles.

Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.
