Confused As Usual.

Post by GARYS »

I started seeing a massage therapist five weeks ago and I have her treat my abdominal TPs when I see her once a week. Before seeing her I had tried sticking with stretching everyday and this has been for the last 10 weeks. One of the things that has me the most confused is that before I started the stretching and basically doing nothing but trying to keep my abdomen relaxed I would go through periods of relief out of nowhere. Now that I have been stretching and working these abdominal PTs my symptoms do not seem to get those periods of relief. My first treatment when she found all of these abdominal TPs I did feel some relief for a few days, but now that I think about it maybe it was just from having the hope that she may have found a major part of my problem. My abdomen is full of TPs and from what she is saying is that we are breaking through the clumps of them and treating them more individually now and I know people have talked about the layers and working to get through the layers and treat the deeper ones. Also does it matter that these TPs we are treating do not refer pain to my bladder/urethra where 99% of my symptoms are although they are pretty painful and do refer pain to my lower back and throughout my whole abdomen. Has anyone with urethral pain/burning been lucky enough to find any spots where this seems to be coming from? Anyone else who has had there abdominal TPs treated had a similar experience, and does it sound like I should continue with these treatments? Also I have also been having a lot more bowel movements, but this still does not relieve the feeling. Thank You

As a layperson this is a tough problem to address. We don't have definitive proof of anything. All you can do is try and see where it leads you, or stop if you feel like it is the wrong direction to go in.

Personally, I only did PT for about six months. I saw some improvement in about 8 months.

For me, stretching helped when I found the right ones, and so did relaxation. At PT, the most effective things were learning to relax and electrostim.

Are you in a position to try a different PT and compare the results?

YOu have only been doing the massage for about 5 weeks, so that is not very long by typical PT standards. But I can understand your hesitancy with respect to whether it is helping or not. I felt the same way. Not sure I ever resolved that question fully, but I did learn a lot from the PT.

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

Doing these abdominal treatment for TPs is about my best shot I guess since nobody else has ever found anything else (other than being told my pelvic muscles were shot/tight). I Actually had a good week following my last treatment, but had another one Thursday and starting Friday I started feeling bad again. So not exactly sure, but I guess I will stick with it since we are still trying to treat the abdominal TPs. When she works on them they are painful but I never get referred pain to where I have all my pain, is that Ok? One other thing, since this last treatment I have been feeling like my rectum/bowels are full even though since the last treatment it almost like something broke loose and I have passed a lot of stool but keep having the need to go feeling.

Those symptoms sound very similiar to mine after about 5 weeks of tp.
I had the internal feeling that my intestines were full that would always come back after TP, but its getting better and more days apart from when I feel it.
Are you getting internal TP as well?

I get that too, especially directly after treatment and perhaps the next day too. I think it's a bit of inflamation of the rectum caused by the stretching.

That's the most horrible thing about internal treatment when it's being done - the feeling that you need to crap! :-D

My Tp is external only. I tried internal but nothing was found except the tight muscles. I am really hoping I can get things a lot better from the terrible TPs in my abdomen. I really wish for all of us going through this someone could tell us our treatment is definitely working even with the increased pain from treatments. It screws up your mind so bad it can make you crazy. I think I'm walking a fine line!!!!
When you guys get your treatments does it recreate your symptoms?

Yes it does mate - recreates symptoms I haven't had for a year. Gotta be good otherwise why else would muscle manipulation cause all the pain?

In people without chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome they just wouldn't get such levels of pain. keep it up for a sustained period & not just on & off.

Think of poor old David Wise trying it out for the first time not knowing if it would work. He had to wait 2 years!!
Age: 29 | Onset Age: 26 | Symptoms: initially severe burning throughout pelvis - much better; muscles spasms all over region, back pain, chronic IBS (much better) | Helped By: Psychotherapy, SP stretches, swimming, accepting the condition (understanding there is treatment); stress/anxiety management; possibly basic quercetin; valerian root, vit B & calc & magn supplements; gluten avoidance & especially dealing with chronic constipation. | Worsened By: stress / anxiety, too much sex; repressed emotions; personality goodist traits. 80% better

Its been 4 days since my treatment and I still have that feeling in my intestines, almost like it might have moved down to my rectal sphincter (makes it feel better when I push to pass gas. My TP treatments dont refer anything to the places where my pain is, so that makes me nervous that it may not helping. I am supposed to go again Thursday but was wondering if I should let this feeling in my intestines go away first?

Garys,

Tight muscles in the pelvic region can be a problem too, they dont have to have TPs to be an issue. I've never felt any TPs, never been told I had any after seeing two TPs "trained" in pelvic floor disorders, but I do have tight muscles down there, and stretching, benzos, internal/external massage and baths all help. Dont just assume you can treat that external TP and ignore those tight muscles.

Regards,

SS

Timely information. I just got from my third PT session and my penis hurts again for the first time in weeks.
I am not a doctor too!
Age 64, sudden onset 5/06 during bout of flu, colitis, lung and liver problems. Pain in penis, then moved to rectum. No urinary symptoms. Use Lyrica, Elavil, paxil, Xanax, morphine, vicodin, relaxation, pads for sitting, 100+ PT sessions. Sensitive to gluten, milk protein, soy. I have CFS, anxiety, GERD, Barrett's, colitis, kidney stones, one of which referred pain to penis.
