first major flare in a year

Post by robertpagen »

I seem to have triggered a flare with too much sex and some tension. It really has me down as I am an old hand at this. Hope some of the sages can lift my spirit as it is making me anxious. Also I have had some PT sessions from Marilyn Freedman but they seem to leave me aching more. I need to sleep at night too.

I was so happy with the last year, nice sex, good sleep.

Hope some veterans will lift my spirit.

Robert

Well, unlike your chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome in its infancy, this flare will probably be shorter in duration and probably won't lead to years of suffering the way your chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome did in the past. It definitely serves as a sign that we have to keep working at this, even if at a reduced level, at all times.

There's my spirit lifter. Did it work?

I hope that is right about the shorter duration. In your experience how can I avoid letting it make me nervous and losing sleep over. Honestly I feel scared as I had started to rebuild my life.

I don't think I've read a post yet on this forum where flare-ups for those that are well on the road to recovery last any decent length of time. Every time the duration is short.

As to how to avoid making you nervous - best thing to suggest is to reframe it as flares seem to be a natural part of the healing process. It's amazingly positive that this is the first flare you've had in 12 month - superb progress. At least you know that it should calm down quickly. Just make sure you do all the right things to help that happen (relaxation, stretching, etc).

trigger point therapy which I did in response to the flares onset seems to have further irritated it and I have not slept for two nights. I now fear the PT and I hurt. Catastrophic thoughts that the PT injured something, though it was routinePT

pain ache

Post by robertpagen »

how long are muscles supposed to ache after a PT session and is it suppossed to hurt when the pt IS pushing on the trigger point?

it just seems the PT exacerbates things

Robert

I do PT everyday - for around 30 mins - though when I used to visit a physio a couple years ago it was once a week.

I've had sessions when the increase in pain following the treatments has lasted almost all week - so it does depend.

How about seeing your doctor/GP and get something to help you sleep and calm you down? My advice is to take something to help you get through this flare.

Stick in there mate - it WILL calm down.

can PT do damage in there to nerves or urethra?

I'd think it would be possible - but I think you'd need to go some to do any permanent damage. My advice (and I know it's easy to say) is to try and curb the catastrophic thinking. The chances (incredibly high) are that even if you have caused some trauma, it will calm down and heal/recover over the next week.

In my humble opinion, getting nerve damage from PT has an extremely low possibility.

I agree. She'd have to be jumping up and down on you.

It sounds to me that part of the current problem may be this catastrophic thinking - Richard's right, you've made fantastic progress yet now all you think of is how you've ruined everything and the happy visions of your future you allowed yourself to build in the last year have, mirage-like, disappeared. That's illogical, and if I were writing your posting, you'd be telling me that too. Try to relax and not be fearful of the future - in doing so, you may paradoxically be prolonging the pain.

Hi Robert- sorry to hear that you have taken a step backward. It would probably be a good idea for you to call Dr. Wise again and have a chat with him. He always helps to put things back into perspective. I know he helped me feel better when I had a relapse after prolonged improvement following the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol.
Age: 39 | Onset Age: 32 | Symptoms: urethral burning, increased urge to urinate, pain after sex, rectal fullness, now much better 6 years into Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol | Helped By: PT(trigger point therapy), paradoxical relaxation, valium, hot bath, stretching, Theracane | Worsened By:too vigorous sex, skipping stretches and daily relaxation

Sounds like your nervous reactions have created a self fufilling prophecy. you need to relax.

PT won't hurt you.

Also, sleep. lack of sleep is the start of depression, anxiety. Get some Dr. help if you need to here. Its the one thing they can prescribe that is of use.

If you have not done some deep meditation/relaxation, start it. It will help this flare pass faster.

Tuesday

Post by robertpagen »

Hello to all,

It is tuesday noon in Manhattan and the flare is moderating quite a bit, which is amazing to me. I went to the urologist yesterday (Moldwin) who really knows this stuff. I guess having been doing so well made me really react catastrophically when I felt a relapse. In the old days when I hurt to some degree all the time I had nothing to compare that state to, but when you have Normal for comparison, it is really tough.

Psychologically I guess my tolerance for that type of pain is not what it was through those blind years. Interesting
