frequent urination relief question
I know this site is more for the pain, but does anyone have any tips for slowing down the frequent need to urinate and the discomfort.

I encourage anxiety prone UCPPS people to consider L-Theanine
Age, 44 onset age 37 Feb 2006 Freq. need to urinate. Sensation of having to urinate soon after going. Perineum discomfort/burning/tightness, pubic area discomfort @ times, poor urine stream, post urine dripping/spray. All symptoms have improved with my protocol. At the worst I give it a 1 to 2 on irritation and discomfort and frequency. Helps: Elavil 5mg for anxiety and mast cell protection, (will only take it as needed) self internal PT as needed, stretching, walking, stairmaster cardio workout and light weights, reducing stress, moment to moment relaxation, deep breathing relaxation and using a Theracane. Makes worse: sitting for long periods, stress, over focusing on it. Currently 95%-98% recovered. Stay positive, relaxed and control your anxiety.

First things first: this site is NOT just for pain. Secondly: DON't PANIC!
You are doing many of the right things and your condition is, unsurprisingly, improving. I think you may well never experience some of the pain you have read about on this site. And your frequency of urination will improve as you continue to treat the condition.
It's hard to swallow, but there is definitely a psychological component to this illness and the less you live in fear of the future and how this may affect your life and your happiness the less you will be assailed by this need to urinate. Your new hyper-awareness of that bodily system is a natural reaction to anything that threatens you - you focus on the threat. Try to let go of this and it will ease a little.
Others here may be better able to advise you on practical things you might do to ease frequency but you might try to take Quercetin, which has helped a number of people here. For me, along with Elavil, recently PT and generally trying not to let the whole thing get to me, that really helped take the heat out of my own set of symptoms.

Hi carld,
How frequent is your urination?
Have you tried an anticholinergic like Oxytrol or Detrol?
Do you wake up at night to urinate?

I have just read EVERY posts on this board and it seems that for people who caught on to the main cause of this condition, namely, the psychological part, are able to keep the condition in check and beat it down without having their symptom gets worse.
I'm one of those people. I found this website just 2 months into my problem and I was able to got back to 100% symptom free.. however, due to stress in the last few days, my symptoms are back
but I'm not freaked out this time.
It's funny really, I almost predicted the flare a few days before saying to myself "oh darn, with this much stress it's going to be back" and sure enough, it's back now in mild form. It's a bit depressing since I had thought I beat it for good but I'm sure to beat it again this time as well.

Help a Dude - I agree with your comments but I also have a few issues I'd like to raise. I too found this forum within months of having the condition and 15 months on my pain is manageable the vast majority of the time. I used to think as you do (& sometimes I still convince myself that this is the line to take) that because I had the condition for a short amount of time before finding the forum etc hence freeing myself from the pain-anxiety-tension cycle (that many unfortunate guys in the past found themselves in) that I could see the pain through and be ok.
Now I'm not so sure if that is the right path to take. Dont get me wrong I think that is a very crucial approach to learn about your condition and stop worrying & for many men who dont even go for PT their symptoms may remain manageable / low for the rest of their lives (with the aid of knowledge gained largely from this forum). But then again look at Scotsman / Sleeper Service who went to PT within months of learning of their condition and found that they had many TP's. IT's a difficult on this subject - the do I dont I debate] I dont think either approach is wrong but the reason I'm going for - "DO I" (tackle it now i.e TP) is because knowing me & how life deals out its cards one day when my mother passes away or my child has a health problem or I get divorced (sorry to be morbid but my point is - stressors happen and affect you no matter how relaxed you become) I will get a FLARE UP & PERHAPS WORSE THAN LAST TIME & MORE PROLONGED. Granted I won't be scared of the flare up & I'll know how to deal with it but I dont want that - the more I can deal with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome now the more confidant I will feel getting on with the rest of my life.
BUT I repeat even if you do little to tackle your condition in terms of physical therapy I think the knowledge of what the condition is, stress relief, quercetin & dietary changes can be enough to "keep it at bay" and manageable for years and years.

carld, for your type of symptoms, have you tried diet modification at all? And of course you need to see a good uro to see if there are any physical issues.
GP2, I never had much luck with trigger point so I can't comment on that even though I tried for weeks to "feel around". My symptom include bad "spasm" which feel like bands of muscle twitches and pulls and sometime feel like someone is squeezing my "parts". Imaging trying to sleep with that. I did find a few tender points but other than that I'm not having much luck with TP.
There is no single "right path" for anyone to take. I see that almost everyone's symptoms differs in small and major way except the initial freaking out scared part
I too have some stress generating issue that will be part of my life for a long time to come. There is NOTHING anyway can do about that. part of the process is to come to term with that. I thought about seeing a psychotherapist for a while now but I wonder how much they can really do because it's really up to me to deal with it, one way or the other.
It's up to the individual to find the correct mix of "thing" to try. If something don't work, try another and don't give up.

Constant urination
For me, this all subsided when everything else did. It took 6 months or so of consistent effort. Try to increase daily stretching frequency and do one relaxation tape for at least 15 mins per day.
You would be amazed to find that this 15 minutes is the ONLY release you are giving your body for the whole day! It makes a big difference.
Also, don't get discouraged. It will get worse with stretching if you hit the right spots, at least initially. You need to keep at it.
Also for me, wheat was a big irritant so eliminating it helped a lot. I knew this at first because if I had not eaten all day, I always felt great by dinner time! A good simple test for me.

Makes worse: Stress, Alcohol (1-2 days after), coffee, Artificial sweeteners, chocolate, tonic Wheat/gluten. Drink a lot of water!!! 95% better to date!

I agree that this condition is idiosyncratic.
You'll get to the bottom of it like we all do eventually if we are persistent and use this forum to help us.
