Started PT Therapy & have question

Post by Duke »

I started PT therapy a week ago. I have seen the therapist 3 times so far. She tested my muscle tone with a bio-feedback probe and found the tone to not be good-extremely tense. She has done both external work and internal trigger point release. The internal work was extremely painful. She also gave me a series of stretches to do daily and a physiological quieting relaxation tape to listen to. I have been doing all of my homework diligently. So far there is no change but of course it is way too early . As I have discussed in the past I have had this condition for a very long time but am determined to rid myself of it this time. My question to those who have gone through the PT therapy is this- What is the best number of times per week to have the PT therapy performed. The therapist wants to see me 2X per week. What about once a week?
Can I still get the same results but only have it take a little longer?
Because of my job and the location of the therapist 2X a week is rough.
Thanks for your responses.

sorry to Duke: this doesn't contribute an answer but asks a supplementary question:

How long should a PT session ideally be? My London PT has sessions of either 30 or 45 minutes. For sheer financial reasons I'm trying to keep these to 30 mins, once a week. Is this a false economy?

Thanks..

For the first month, I did 3 sessions per week. After this, I changed it to once every other week, although I kept up the PT with my wife twice a week. If you can stick to it for a few weeks, then you can lessen your PT's sessions. I too think that 2X per week is a good number if you can afford it, although most of us can't. If you have a partner, get her involved! It is a great long term investment to teach her.

Regarding therapy length, my sessions were typically one hour, with about 15 minutes of "warm-up", and 15 minuts of external work, about 15-20 minutes of internal work, and then a few minutes of talking. I used to be disappointed when there wasn't enough internal work, but now I know how important my external muscles can be. It all needs to be worked on.

Thanks for your reply. I have one per week scheduled for the next two weeks. I'll try to increase to 2X per week after that for a few weeks. I'm guessing that the internal work is the most important although I haven't had too much of that yet.

I initially went once a week but the sessions were for an hour. The PT had recommended 2 sessions a week but only for a half hour each time. The weekly hour sessions worked well for me and I am now down to every 3 weeks. My PT is also in New York City. Good luck.

I wouldn't say internal work is the most important. It depends on your case. My abdominals and perineum were critical for me. It's a mistake to assume all of this is happening inside only. However, when it comes to PT, I wanted him to mostly work internally because I felt I could generally handle the external work myself. But in my case, I would say my problems were 50/50.
