for those with muscle related post-defecation pain

Post by lookouth »

If you have post defecation pain that you think is caused by the involuntarily spasm of your sphincter/psoas muscles after a bowel movement I have found a technique that helps reduce the strength of the spasms and the pain afterwards. I do not know if this will work for others but it works for me and seems to be fairly logical. Quite simply, do not urinate when you defecate, it is almost an involuntary response to urinate a little when you defecate but for me the tightness and light spasms around my bladder and in my bladder neck that come from urination are just enough to set of a cascade of spasms in my sphincter area and pelvic floor after defecation- however I have noticed over about a year's time that if I don't urinate when I defecate I have significantly fewer muscle spasms and pain afterwards. I suggest you at least try this to see if it works for you, it has helped me significantly. Usually, I have an almost uncontrollable urge to urinate a bit when I defecate and if I feel like I am unable to suppress it, I found that when I go to defecate if I urinate instead (and urinate only) then come back 20 minutes or more later (when I can tell my muscles have settled down) and defecate. Sorry for the lucid explanation, but if it helps anyone as much as it has helped me it will be worth it.

Hi there:
I have same kind of problem. Everytime I go for defecation, very little comes out and after the bowel movement there is this discomfort which is almost unbearable coz of the muscle spasm particularly in groin area. Generally it stays for an hour and then go away...Did you even have defecation problems? Someone I sit there for half and hr and still do nothing...if yes, what worked for you. Thanks in advance.

There's another possibility -- it's known that defecation makes urinary symptoms worse in the following hour or so by modulating levels of certain neurotransmitters such as glycine and GABA. I'm not sure if it applies to increase pain, though.
Rectal distention inhibits bladder activity via glycinergic and GABAergic mechanisms in rats.

Started: Spring 2003; high urinary frequency and pain associated with bladder filling; urinary hesitancy; pubic/prostate/perineal discomfort; Helped by: trigger point therapy, Afrin nasal spray, Cymbalta, hydrocodone (small doses), distraction. Makes worse: sex.
