Question about internal pt and fingernails
Hey everyone.. When I went for my PT on Thursday of last week, I noticed I felt like a stabbing pain when she was hitting trigger points. I usually feel a sharp kind of pain, but not a stabbing pain.. Thinking back on it, I'm thinking maybe its possible she was stabbing me with her fingernails? They aren't real long but they are there.
Age 21.. | Symptoms: Extreme discomfort in bladder, and lower abdomen.. To the point that I can't sit still, and sleep, can't do anything.. The only that will help is getting into the bath... Urinary frequency, Urinary hesitancy, sometimes taking a few minutes to get just a little bit out.. Sometimes lower back pain when I lay down at night.. Never have the golf ball feeling everybody talks about, and never have a problem sitting down.. Helps: Hot baths, Xanax (but makes me extremely tired), stretching (it seems like only sometimes), pain killers (ex: Percocet, but if I take them, they end up making me worse the next days following, probably due to the urinary retention they cause).. Makes worse: Stress is the main main thing, caffeine and spicy foods too, but not really a whole whole lot.. only a moderate amount..

As a physical therapist that does internal work, I would encourage you to discuss your concerns with your therapist. It is important to keep your fingernails short to do internal releases, not only for the clients comfort, but also as not to compromise the integrity of the glove. Hope that helps.

I seen a PT a couple years ago (Rhonda Katarinos) and while she was doing the internal work she asked if it felt like she was digging her fingernails in, which it did and afterwards she showed me that her nails were so short that it was impossible. I forget the point of her showing me this, but she is a well known and very good PT. I wish I could have kept seeing her but she was in another state. I highly doubt your PT has long nails I think that is just a normal feeling.

I agree with the prior poster. When my PT was hitting trigger points, it felt like he was jabbing a pencil in there. He showed my his fingernails too, and they were short. TP's can produce sharp pains when pressed, so it wouldn't suprise me if the fingernail-type pain was really just normal pain.
With that said, when my wife tried PT on me, her fingernails were too long, AND she press directly with them. I made her cut them on the two fingers she used.
