Question about TPs

Post by sam5935 »

As a newbie, and still in the process of reading AHIP, I have yet to figure out what sort of therapy I'll be able to afford. That being said, if I'm unable to go to a PT regularly, is it possible and useful for me to try to find trigger points and work on them myself? So far, all I do is fumble around, not finding anything sore at all. Any thoughts are appreciated.

try a Theracane on your abdomen and adductor muscles. You will feel a sharp burning pain when you hit a trigger point. Hold pressure on it for 60 seconds. Leave the internal work to a qualified PT. Hope this helps.

Off-topic a bit but what's the experience of people in the USA with having insurance paying for PT or Psych help?

So...yesterday, I found a spot that was a little sore areound my anal sphincter. I worked on it a bit and last night my symptoms were a bit worse, including some that I rarely have. Today, however, my lower back is really stiff! Lower back pain is one of my main symptoms. I wonder if I've found a spot?

I had a lot of spots around the sphincter. This is not uncommon. A minor flare-up after treating it is a great sign you have found an area that needs work. Also, don't worry if it doesn't hurt when pressing. Remember that all your muscles are connected. Loosening up one area helps the surrounding areas, even if it doesn't produce TP-type-pain. So work systematically on all areas of your abdomen, stomach, perineum, and sphincter, and don't miss any spots. This will still help. Also note that some TP's are beneath bands of muscle that are taut, but not painful. You can't reach these TP's until you work on the outer bands first, and release them. So even if a spot isn't causing pain, it is still worth breaking it apart because a) it could cause pain later if left untreated, b) it could be covering up other TP's, and c) loosening it up helps other surrounding muscles.

Don't worry if you can't afford PT. You can accomplish a lot externally (an often-overlooked area of treatment). You can work on your stomach, abdomen, perineum, sphincter (around all sides, and even partially in, although not all the way). You can make great head-way doing this.

Regarding internal work. I did it very successfully myself. Others here have done the same. But I cannot recommend this without you getting treatment from a qualified PT first. You have to know what things should feel like before you go in there and do it yourself. Once you get this experience, you have a fighting shot of doing good. You can even ask the PT how to treat yourself, where to reach, what angles to use. It's worth the investment to get it done professionally just so that you can have the confidence when doing it alone. Without this guidance, however, you'll back off the second you find a sore spot, not knowing if it is a real TP or for fear that it is an artery, or something like that. The PT can remove a lot of this doubt, and that is critical.

Sam,

Jeff Franceschi, of Franceschi and Associates in Rohnert Park (just north of you), is VERY open to teaching you how to manage your own therapy. He will teach you, a girlfriend, a spouse, whoever. He is good, and also very sensitive to the situation. But if David Wise trusts him, you can too!

When your treating or trying to treat your own TPs, is it true that if you dont hold them long enough to release them it will just be worse? I ask because during a internal treatment I was having quite a bit of pain and she told me if she let it go to soon it would make things worse. This scares me when trying to treat myself that if I dont hold it long enough it could actually make things worse. I hope she was wrong, and that any treatment on them would help.

I'm planning on getting a session or two in with the guy in Rohnert Park or another PT that Dr. Wise recommended to me. Right now, I'm just fumbling around and have no idea if I'm doing myself any good. It's actually really frustrating but I guess I should just be patient until I've had some instruction.

I don't really know what you mean by just working around these areas. What am I feeling for? I haven't found any spots that refer pain elsewhere and any spot hurts if I press it hard enough..

Well, anyway, thanks for your time and energy. Any thoughts are most welcome.
