Flare ups and stretching?

Post by GARYS »

I searched for past posts about people having flare ups after starting doing stretches and found some answers, but my situation seems a little different. I seem to feel my best for some reason when I do nothing at all, except trying to always leave my abdominal muscles relaxed. I know this sounds like I am not trying to do anything to get myself better, but it just seems like if I start doing something it just makes me worse. I was doing great for a couple of months and then I got a flare up, as soon as things settled down I started doing stretches. After about the second day I am having more pain than I did with my recent flare up. Should I just keep going with it or stop and just focus on the relaxing of my abdominal muscles? The other question I have is that while I was searching old posts I read about people having pain in and around their navel when its touched or pressed. I have that too. I also always feel and see muscles in my abdomen like fluttering, I have used my Theracane in the past and pressed around and I have pain all over my abdomen when I push in. My only major symptom is urethral burning after urinating followed immediately with a tremendous urge to keep urinating. With this set of symptoms and descriptions should I be doing the stretching and using the Theracane and just see the increased pain and burning a good sign to keep going? And how often should a person stretch and treat TrPs? Has anyone out there found a good stretch or area to treat to help the urethral burning?
Thanks
Age:33 | Onset Age: 20 | Symptoms: burning urethra after urinating, followed by rush to urinate again, rectal pain after a bowel movement sometimes, frequency. | Helped By: Pyridium and Ativan | Worsened By: stress, sitting and unknown reasons.

Though in general, the opinion on this board seems to be that flares after stretching are a good sign that you are really getting at the problem areas (just do a quick search) I would add one caveat: often when I am doing an intense stretch I inadvertently notice myself tensing up muscles around it. For example when doing a variation on the pigeon stretch to stretch my psoas, I have found that I have a tendency to tense my lower back muscles- it sort of gives the superficial feeling of 'wow I am stretching much harder' because you are straining all the muscles and it feels more dramatic and so it is easy to get in the habit of doing, and to keep doing and think it feels right. The fact is this type of clenching while stretching, sometimes very subtly, can cause post-stretching discomfort and sometimes flares for me. So while I would say in general a flare after a stretch is probably a good sign, it could also be the result of you over-exerting yourself to try and hit that good stretch spot. My recommendation: get a well trained PT or Yoga Teacher to watch you while you stretch and give you some tips on posture, breathing and staying relaxed. Alternatively just breathe deep and while you stretch close your eyes and focus you attention on the muscle you are stretching as well as the areas where us chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome sufferers tend to hold the most tension- lower back, around the anal sphincter, abs...etc... this can make a huge difference, in my opinion.
Age:22 | Onset Age:16.5 | Symptoms: Pain with extended sitting, Pain shortly folllowing urination, mostly above pubic bone, Pain after defecation mostly around external sphincter, Pain after ejaculation mostly in Urethra | Helped By: Progressive and Moment to Moment Relaxation, Stretching, Bed Rest (laying down and relaxing muscles), Hot Baths, Hot Showers, | Worsened By: Alcohol (variably), Ejaculation, Urination, Defecation, Stress, Extended Sitting, Sleeping in the wrong position, tensing my muscles while writing or doing anything else stressful/intense, Progress: 65%, basically only dealing with post-ejaculatory pain, onset after about an hour, peaks for 3-6 hours and then remains sore for a day.
