Hello Everyone,
I have been working at my recovery now for just over 2 years. I am about 80% to 90% recovered now. Before I started my recovery I suffered for well over a decade.
The main point of my message is to give hope to all that are currently suffering. I want to emphasize that according to my Physical Therapist I had some of the worst trigger points and pelvic floor muscle restrictions she had ever seen. I have been generally pain free and mostly symptom free for some time now -- I still get some minor discomfort sometimes but it does not last very long and is not that bad to deal with.
The key ingredients to my recovery:
1. Lots of PT
2. Paradoxical Relaxation -- If you can't get the Dr Wise Tapes on this just get some good Mindfulness Mediation Tapes -- Trust me, they are about the same thing.
3. Cognitive Therapy -- I can't say enough about this as it significantly reduces stress which reduces the muscle tension and really accelerates the recovery.
So please remember that no matter how bad things seem with this condition, significant improvement and recovery are very possible -- but I believe the 3 components above are critical and synergistic.

I just wanted to clarify that in my message below I meant "Mindfulness Meditation" (forgot to put the "t" in the word meditation.
Also, for the cognitive therapy component I use the Byron Katie method as Dr Wise recommends in his book.
Take Care and Relax as much as you can !!

NoMo,
Congratulations on your success and encouraging words. I am also following the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol (on and off for about 2.5. years) but recovery has been slow. Regarding the Katie work, how often did u practice it? As of now, I only do it weekly with a therapist but I would like to do it more often, only I can't get myself to sit down and write it out, I feel like it is the thing I really need but I resist it at every turn, especially when PT and relaxation and the rest of life are time consuming enough as it is. THanks
Kevin

THanks for this post! I use cognitive therapy techniques, too. Its great! I'm glad to hear that you are on the road to recovery. Its amazing that after a decade of suffering you can make such progress in two years!
This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.
