Sitting

Post by rider fan »

Like many of you, I find that sitting all day makes my symptoms worse. In fact, I usually feel great in the morning and on the weekends, probably because I'm not sitting in my chair.

Of course, the obvious solution here is to get one of those pads to sit on at work. However, I work in a huge office (about 100 people on this floor) with a very open floor plan. I have zero privacy, and I would get some pretty quizzical looks and probably questions from my boss. Now I'm not embarrassed to be having some CPPS, but people here aren't a very warm and fuzzy group. Is there something more discreet that I could use besides bringing in a 2 inch foam pad?

Any thoughts, suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks guys.

Your just going to have to decide which is worse, the pain or a little curiosity about why you are sitting on a pad. I decided long ago, to deal with the curiosity

I also requested my employer provide me with a stand up workstation. And due to Federal Law if a Dr says you need it, they have to provide it. Luckily enough I work for the Fed Gov't so they quickly and graciously filled my request. I have both a sit down and stand up workstation with a computer at both. Makes the day much better and when things are bad I can stand up and work. But even when things are good, I still stand a couple of hours a day.
Age: 45 Onset: 43. | Symptoms: Tightness, spasms, burning and pain in the perineum. Occassional mild pain after urination in the perineum. Helped by: Cardura, quitting caffiene, relaxation, fiber, stand up workstation and some PT a year ago. Makes Worse: ANXIETY, ULTRAM, going to work, sitting or squatting too long, constipation (big problems), stress, and sometimes unexplainable.

Just say it's your coccyx bone (tail bone) that hurts. This way there is no embarrassment. I use a theraseat cushion which is decent and you can't really tell that there is a cutout in the middle. I am also lucky enough that my company has given everyone hydraulic desks that you can raise up to stand when you want too.

Rider, I've found that, for me, a hard toilet seat in a pillow case works better than a cushion. The cushions don't support the remaining functional muscles very well, and the irritated ones end up getting strained.

Anyways, at work I lie on my side on a beanbag chair in my cubicle.

This is not medical advice, and I am NOT a doctor of medicine or a related field.
* Age:33 Onset: February 2004.
* 99.9% IMPROVEMENT in 2.5 Years with the first year being the really hard part
* Current Symptoms: Mild irritation of perineal muscles on occasion. Relieved for days at a time by a specific stretch (see below).
* Initial Symptoms: Terrible penile, urethral, rectal, and perineal burning/aching with addition afferent sensations.
* Current Treatments: Deep stretching of the legs and pelvis. Most effective: Deep psoas and levitar ani stretch using the first phase of the "pigeon pose" from Yoga. When a deep pulling is felt in the middle of the pelvis next to the upper rectum, symptoms are completely alleviated for several days.
* Past Treatments Hyperprotection of the perineum for 1.7 years, Walking, Rectal biofeedback, Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol, Conditioned deep relaxation practice, Men's Multi-Vitamin and an Extra B-complex pill, all seemed to help.

Thanks for the responses. I checked out the theraseat and I could get away with that probably. I don't think they're taking orders until the 28th for some reason.

Anyone else use the Theraseat?

Take the pad, deal with the "embarrassment" later.

I find that the softer the chair, the better it is. Sitting on a nice, cushy pillow seems to do the trick for me. I don't have to worry about this too much at home and since I dont' work in an office enivronment, not really an issue. My part time job is part physical...a lot of standing, walking, sitting down to drive the zamboni. But the nasty, hard chairs in my lecture rooms at school often produce some uncomfortable sensations during a long class.

But you could just give vague answers...your tailbone or back got hurt, etc. Certain aspects of this problem can be very embarrassing, indeed.
Age:23 | Onset Age:22 | Symptoms:Urinary hesitancy, moderate frequency, urgency and retention, slight perinneum, rectal and leg pain, frequent abdominal/bladder pain. Red/white spotty irritation on penis | Helped By:hot baths or showers, walking and moving around, pain medications | Worsened By: sitting for a long time, holding urine too long. I'd say I'm about 75% better naturally so far.

If you are in a cubicle, it's very easy to add a standing shelf in it. That's what I did, and the change cost my workplace about $50 for the extra shelf. I tell them I have back pain, and no one questions anything.

I agree just say you have coccydynia due to a fall or something.

I've found making my own pillows is the best way to go. I tried lots of different types of foam rubber etc. Just get a piece and cut a hole in the middle. Experiment with it until you get it the way you want it. Its cheap and it works for me. I use a 1.5 inch thick piece of foam rubber (hard) and cover that with 1 inch of soft spongy material on top. I make a cover for it and now it looks like any normal pillow when I carry it around. Sitting is MUCH less of a problem now. Don't buy these expensive things you get online. I did and it didn't work well at all. Not worth the money. The one I made cost like $4.
Age:31.
Age of onset: 30
Symptoms: Constant pain in coccyx area, stiffness in the rectum, itching and burning in epididymis, anus and inner thigh(only left side). Golf ball in the rectum (seldom).
Recovery status: Symptoms go up and down like a tart's knickers
Cannot Sit

I use a cushion at work and no one has ever asked me why. Some of my fellow managers know the reason, but either way it's no big deal. Being able to sit more comfortably is far more important than some sort of self-consciousness.
