Disability
How many of you are on social security disability (SSDI) or in the process of applying? My chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome is serious enough to prevent me from working, so I have to apply for SSDI. What is your experience applying for SSDI? Any good stories? Any good endings?

Disability
From 1999 to 2002 I should have qualified on any reasonable system for disability benefits. For the most part I woke up in pain and it got worse through the work day. I got only 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night so I almost always showed up to work late each morning. I would regularly close myself up in my workspace to lie on the floor and cry.
But I never took disability. Part of the problem was that I had no good idea how to articulate what was wrong with me. I would have needed a doctor to ok the disability and in those days they called male pelvic pain patients malingerers. When I asked one of the seven urologists I saw in those four years alone if I would qualify for disability he told me I could only qualify for psychological disability. I resisted that stigma as I knew deep down something was physically wrong.
God bless my ex manager as I often came in late and when I DID CALL IN SICK I would do it at the last moment. The system is not fair when you have a hidden ailment like this. I'd have colleagues taking off six weeks for broken bones and dislocated shoulders while I was in debilitating pain as I worked.
On the other hand I feel there was an upside to this. Work served as a distraction from the worst pain. I often had suicidal ideation and I think if I had been at home with nothing to do I would have killed myself.
I don't know the current view of the system (doctors and insurance companies ) as far as male pelvic pain. My occasional symptoms (I had only one major flare in 2005) no longer warrant a disability claim. Still I can fully sympathise with a workers discomfort to sit behind a desk or a vehicle with this condition.
2006 will be the best year yet for all of us.
Be well,
Robert Pagen

This was true for me too. As hard as it was to get out of bed and into the office, once I got fully into my work, I often times had periods of 20 minutes or longer when I experienced no pain at all as I was so focussed on something else.On the other hand I feel there was an upside to this. Work served as a distraction from the worst pain.

Someone on here received it, I remember reading it a while back in an older thread. But their doctor diagnosed him with IC, even though I doubt that was really what he had. The Social Security Administration and most disability boards know what that is, but is like the rest of the world (clueless) when it comes to just the diagnosis of male pelvic pain or chronic prostatitis.
You should be able to find some threads about it by searching the forum.

How many of you are unable to work?
I have not been unable to work since October of 2003. (My onset was late September that year). I drained my savings by early 2005, and I am now pretty much rely on the help of my Gf's family.
