Critical Massage comments (not bad - critical!!)

Post by Mike »

I was just thinking that massage is such an old treatment that I feel it highlights the lack of movement in chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome up until very recently. I say this because the urologist (retired now) I was seeing told me he had been taught yes taught massage in the 50's so if someone taught him and someone taught the person that taught him this treatment could be over a century old! Not many other areas of medicine where you get treatment from this time frame I wouldn't think! BTW I refer to UK urology.

Is massage just hype which is now passing over?

Is their any medical evidence (not guesses or it helps some!) of what it actually does?

If not why risk it, fair enough it helped me a little but so many more men have told me it did nothing or made them worse - yes worse! I think this highlights the need for a total work up before even considering a massage thats what the doc that did mine did he didn't jump straight in obviously he was wise, so it makes me wonder why men book into and are adamant about getting massages without a workup from a good urologist, seems very risky indeed IMO to want a a century old treatment with no work-up and best evidence approach!

The wisest thing ever said to me about having chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome from a doctor was "their is no quick fixes" and you know something as cruel as it sounds he was totally correct! Chasing quick fixes in my experience leads to nothing but harm where as taking time and researching has made all the difference long term this is what I would say to anyone thinking a massage will be a quick fix...

I recently had a massage and it has nealy crippled me. My prostate is very sensitive. I'm a lot worse for it. The doctor still wants me to do another one and I declined. I've been taking pain killers fo the last 7 days because of it. I only hope that I can get back to where I was before the massage. Incidently this doctor is widely viewed as being excellent .
In his experience he says that the massages have been really helpful to most who have taken them.

In 1992 I forbade any doctor from rubbing my prostate, a procedure that brought me nothing but pain. Since then I have improved steadily.

Massage

Post by Jamato »

I can barely walk and the pain is unbearable. My friends can't believe that after almost 3 weeks after the massage I still feel like I'm dying. I have to go on the road in a month and I'm terrifyed that I won't be well enough. I will pobably lose my job if that happens. Pray for me :)

Do you have any suggestions? The doctor wanted to give me another one.
I am really scared and upset and in agony.
Thanks

How do people take the pain?
I've tried Ultram and it gives me a bad headache and is not effective at all. I'm on Vicodine right now. I hate the way I feel on it. I'm going to try switching to something else today and hope that the pain subsides real soon from this damn massage.

The urologist wants to give me a second massage. He says it wil help the pain. I don't know what to do.
Are there any injections that can help?
Is surgery completely out of the question? I'd like to kick this prostate like a soccer ball

Just revisit your own posts. You're still in pain 3 weeks after your first massage. THREE WEEKS! Feel like you're 'dying,' in 'agony and pain' - and you're still wondering if you should get a second massage. Why yes! After all, what's a little more pain?

By the way, your urologist's name, is it Dr. Feliciano?

Seriously, the lesson you should draw here is that some treatments don't work for some people - and the massage thing does not appear to be working for you in the most obvious way imaginable. And Lesson 2 is that doctors don't always know what's best for you. Give him a polite but firm No Thanks :)

Don't get your mind started on stuff like injections & surgery. For pain medication, there are other options. IMO, valium is pretty good. I know it's not something you want to take long-term, but it might do the trick for a short while til you learn more about your condition.
