seeing decrease in post-defecation pain

Post by lookouth »

Like many others on this board one of my long term problems is pain after defecation- clearly this is due to muscle spasms (a hot shower or bath immiedatly after eliminates the pain)- I believe it is the internal and external spinchter muscles as well as a few deeper ones. I have had bene experimenting recently with ways to reduce the pain and a four step protocol has helped significantly.

1. squat or lean forward on your haunches as you defecate
2. I have recently found most substantial remission of pain after defecation when I don't urinate as well (I have pain with urination). Though I am not entirely sure why I think that urinating and defecating has a sort of synergestic effect- if I do one with the other the resultant pain is much more than I get from either independantly.
3. After defecation limit the amount of sitting I do, this seems to aggravate the muscles and increase the pain.
4. Stretching and deep breathing to conciously relax the muscles

I have also found that, contrary to what youd think, sitting longer while defecating actually makes the pain worse afterwards, I try to make my trips as short as possible. I think this works because I am limiting the amount of hard pushing I am doing and also the tensing of the muscles while being in a sitting position.

This is not a medical opionon, but these techniques seem to be pretty harmless to at least try. let me know what you think or how you deal.
