Post by londoner »

Hi. Does anyone know of a London-based physical pherapist who does pelvic pain trigger point work that they would recommend?

Please PM me if you do.

The lack of suitably experienced physios in the UK is disappointing. The only one I know off to date is Bill Taylor in Edinbugh.

What is it about Bill Taylor that sets him apart from the rest? I know he knows his stuff from what you guys have been saying but how did he become so knowledgeable in this field and yet the rest of the UK seems so lacking behind?

I'm sure there are others out there but until one of us finds them I guess we'll never know!

He's trained in myofascial release techniques but I guess the main reason why he's so good is that he has been treating pelvic floor dysfunction for around 4-5 years. Just down to experience.

That's a real shame. Can I ask you if Bill Taylor may know of anyone?

Thanks..

Unfortunately he doesn't know of anyone else in the UK - it's a question that is often asked.

He really needs to train his other physios up in chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome treatment. Trying to get any appointment with Bill is tricky - he's usually booked up 3-4 weeks in advance.

Roughly guessing how old do you think he is? Just wondering what will happen when he retires etc

Physio shortage

Post by Ginty »

He's got a few years left to go yet I would say, early forties maybe.

But you're right this is something I've thought about, I'm currently making good progress going to Bill but what would happen if he was no longer available?

I think he's open to training people, he mentioned to me that he was in discussion with a therapist from Glasgow about training her up, although that's still no help to you down in London admittedly.

However I think the main issue is that no one is interested in learning - its hardly the 'sexy' end of physiotherapy.
All the students today probably have ambitions of being sports physios and the like.

I think maybe the onus on creating more physio's lies within the recovered chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome community. It's something I've thought about but that was before I realised that it takes 4 years to train to be a physiotherapist - I couldn't take that big a career break.
However having said that to treat this condition exclusively you don't have to know about the anatomy of the feet for example and all that a four year course would entail.

From reading here about Stanford it seems that they will train up partners to perform the PT, and that seems to be done in the course of a week.
Perhaps what we need is a network of people in the UK/wherever who are trained up in the rudiments of pelvic floor PT.
A patient could then go to someone like Bill (i.e. a pro), get an initial consultation to identify the problem areas and some treatment outlines and then take these to one of the local 'physio technitians' if you like.

I'd be up for trying something like that anyway.

The way I understand it is that if you 'specialise' in one area then you don't technically need to be a full blown physio. Therfore you don't have to do a degree in physio - although please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have often thought that once this is over for me I will put something back into this community and train to do this on others. In reality if I do this or not I don't know but still at this moment I feel this way. I think that trigger point therapy in general has a lot to offer.

Who was the first to 'discover' Bill? Just wondering if they just got lucky or if Bill was someway involved in the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome comminuty.

My search for someone closer to Edinburgh goes on as it does for many and if I turn up someone who may benefit us then I will be sure to share them with others here.

Alprost (one of the other moderators) recommended Bill to me. I know he does occasionally look at this forum - but he's not really an on-line type of guy.
