Update on my prostatitis...
Hi everyone
Well, I hav'nt posted in awhile so I thought I would update everyone who has been following my story reguarding my lengthy battle with prostatitis...
I was on Cipro for 2 weeks, then Cipro XR for 3 weeks and have now been on Levaquin for about 2-1/2 weeks and will be on it for another few weeks or longer. I was masturbating every day and sometimes twice a day because I kept reading that you should "keep your pipes cleaned out regularly". However, this just made my condition worse and it seemed like I would never heal. Then, I remembered that when I beat this conditon a year ago, I was told by the nurse NOT to masturbate because it would only irritate the prostate and prevent it from healing. I followed her advice and it worked for me. So this time around, I started masturbating every 3-4 days and with each ejaculation, there was less and less pain and now I am 99% better after only a few weeks!. In fact, I barely even feel my prostate anymore.
Now this is great news but the urologist wanted to scope me (cystoscopy) and so I spent the last 10 days in a state of terror, reading about all kinds of horror stories from people who have had the procedure done and regretted it. I had also heard that the rigid scopes are the worst and that you are spread eagle and in stirrups, etc. Anyway, so I just spent the last 10 days worrying myself sick but when I finally made it to my appointment with the urologist's office this afternoon, I was so much better that he did'nt even have to scope me and I even found out that he uses a flexible scope (not a rigid) so that was also good news in case he has to do this later.
So anyway, he did a prostate and seminal vesicle massage and it hurt like crazy but I could feel that my prostate was'nt nearly as tender as it was when he did the last massage. Still, it hurt like heck and while he was doing it I was moaning and groaning and he say's "yeah, I know it hurts quite a bit but just try to relax" and I said "oh man, your KILLING me!!!". So I shot out a bunch of stuff from my penis which was good because my gland is nice and clean now and the antibiotics can penetrate better. Then, I told him that I have had zero libido lately and so he sent me over to the lab and they did about 7 different tests (PSA, testosterone, BMP, etc) and I will get the results back tommorow when I call my urologist back. The Levaquin is also a testosterone killer but In a way, it's actually NICE not to have all that testosterone in my body making me horny and obscessing about sex all the time. It's a lot more peaceful but I have had hot flashes twice now in two days where I feel kind of hot, sweaty and prickly (Levaquin?). I also see things that would have made me very horny at one time and now they do absolutley nothing for me. Anyway, he said "well, I'm not ready to put you on testosterone patches just yet but lets see how the tests go". Anyway, I he did a lot of stuff for me and answered all of my questions and concerns PLUS I got some Elevil (sp?) from my other doc which is supposed to be a mood elevator so I'm pretty happy about all that.
The funny thing is, there was a young fellow who came out of the doctor's office and he had just had a cystoscopy and he was all bowed over grabbing his crotch in pain and saying "I should have NEVER let them do that to me!!!!" and I was thinking "wow, I almost had that done to me...yikes!!!".
Anyway, what a day and thank God it's over (for now!!) :)

Hmmmm.....
Ok, what exactly am I missing here?. I had a good day at the uro's office, I did'nt need the dreaded scope and my condition has greatly improved after limiting masturbation, taking Levaquin and going for frequent prostate massages. I feel 100% better and there was no bacteria or white cells in my EPS and my prostate is no longer tender and inflamed. I decided to post the "good news" here the other day but Then, I come here and it's like everyone is having a pity party for me. I'm sorry but I just don't understand. Could someone please explain this in detail to me?
Thank's (very confused)

There's a lot of information on this site re infections NOT being the cause of the majority of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome sufferers.

Pleased to read though that you had a good day and you feel 100% better. Stay positive and I hope the progress continues.
Richard.

GW - I think you have got things a bit confused here. Can you please specify your symptons and how long you have been sufferring?
This is a board for CHRONIC pelvic pain - ie pain that has been going on in excess of 6 months. It is beyond all reasonable doubt that if antibiotics have not worked withing this 6 month period then bacteria is NOT the cause.
All that 'gland being clean so the abx can penetrate better' is rubbish. The prostate is tissue and anything that has a blood supply can have medication delivered via the blood stream - clogged or not.
i suspect you have had this for less than 6 months
thanks

Pretty self-explanatory if you ask me. What this link tells me as a poster is that I (and others) are free to discuss a wide variety of topics (including prostatitis) and that is just what I've done. So no, I'm not really "confused", I was simply going over my experience at the urologist's office the other day.
As far as your claim that if I've had has this condition for 6 months or longer without any resolution through the use of antibiotics that this somehow automatically rules out prostatitis as a diagnosis, I'll have to dissagree with you. It is a well established (and proven) fact that residual (ie; "phantom") bacteria can lie dormant and out of reach from antibiotics within the acini of the prostate gland for long periods of time. These bacteria can lie dormant for years and cause reinfection making the condition "chronic". Specimens from deceased individuals who were known to have prostatitis have been studied extensively and bacteria have been found even though all cultures (urine, EPS, etc) have come back negative.
Furthermore, any urologist will tell you that prostatic tissue is very difficult for antibiotics to penetrate due the fact that the acini when infected, become inflamed and seal themselves off. That's why prostate massages are so helpful. This has nothing to do with "bloodflow". All he brocures (including the ones at my urologist's office) say this as well.
Having said that, my condition (which I've had for a month and a half now) has greatly improved since the last time I posted here. I credit prayer, frequent urologist-given prostate massages, Levaquin and several lifestyle changes for my recovery. Of course, it could all come back again once I finish the Levaquin and I do sense that it's "still there" from time to time. I am also finding that Celexa and Lorazepam help. Not out of the woods yet but getting better and just trying to play this thing by ear:).

Posts that aren't related to pelvic pain may be removed. This "Free-For-All" forum was created by popular demand, to allow anyone to give voice to their opinion about whatever aspect of male pelvic pain they wish.

A few GP's have told me that the reason they prescribe antibiotics for at least 6 weeks is that even though its probably not bacterial prostatitis, the condition tends to resolve itself for most sufferers within that timescale and having them on antibiotics during that time lets the patient at least 'believe' that something is actively being done to help their condition.GoatWhisperer wrote:...Having said that, my condition (which I've had for a month and a half now) has greatly improved since the last time I posted here. ..
It's always important though for any new sufferers to ascertain whether their condition is bacterial as without the appriopriate treament the symptoms and consequences can become very serious.

I think you should discuss with your doctor the dangers of taking months of quinolones. IMO, you are asking for trouble.GoatWhisperer wrote:I was on Cipro for 2 weeks, then Cipro XR for 3 weeks and have now been on Levaquin for about 2-1/2 weeks and will be on it for another few weeks or longer.

BTW, research shows that men with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome have increased blood flow to the prostate, and Levaquin has excellent penetration of the prostate gland.
