Infection

Post by Piston »

In the beginning of May I started to feel a real bad feeling when I urinated and had to go all the time.I waited about a week and finally went to the doctor. He did a urine sample and did a psa.The urine sample tested positive for ecoli and my psa came back at a 24.1.He told me that I needed to see a urologist.I went to the urologist and he said that he thought I had bactierial Prostatitis and put me on Cipro. My prostate area was also burning and had two yellow ejaculations when having sex.I took the ciro for about three months before the burning in my prostate stopped. The frequent need to urinate continued.A psa was done again and it came back at a 2.6.The doctor decided to do a cystoscopy with a bladder distention on me.He said that he saw many hemoriges on my bladder and that he thought I had interstitial cystitis totally not related to the prostatitis.I am now on elmorin. What are the chances of having both of these at the same time.I would think very slim.Could the ecoli have caused both of these illnesses.Very confused.Thank you for any help.

Piston,

To my knowledge they can overlap. I suggest you also take a look at http://ucpps.men/1/ for further help and info on IC. You will find a few people here with the IC diagnosis but the vast majority seem to suffer from other types of problems here. I personally think I might have a mild form of IC. I have been symptomatic for 18 months now but I feel much better now than I did when this started. I would loose a hand however to be completely free of this...Hang in there and study this site and other IC related ones. Also make sure to find a good uro with knowledge about IC to help you further.

Good luck

Thank you so much. The uro that I go to thinks that the conditions aren't related to each other but to get them both at the same time when they are almost in the same place, the chances must be millions to one.Maybe I need a new doctor. Thanks again.

The pain and urinary symptoms from the infection of either the bladder or prostate can cause the pelvic floor muscles to go into spasm and develop hypersensitive 'trigger points', so that even when the infection itself clears up, you are left with symptoms not necessarily only from the bladder or prostate, but from the pelvic floor muscles, which can cause symptoms of urinary frequency. Therefore, as well as being treated for IC, you should definately have your pelvic floor muscles checked out. Read this quote from Physical Therapist Rhonda Katorinas, who explains what can happen:
A trigger point is an area of hyper-irritability in a muscle, usually caused by a muscle that is being overloaded and worked excessively. How does this affect an IC patient? Unfortunately, we do not always know what comes first; the chicken or the egg. Let's assume in this case we do. A patient who has never had any symptoms before develops an awful bladder infection, culture positive. She is treated with antibiotics, as she should be. Symptoms are, as we all know, frequency, urgency and pain on urination. Maybe the first round of antibiotics does not help, so she goes on a second round. They work. But she has now walked around for 2, maybe 3 weeks with horrible symptoms. Her pelvic floor would be working very hard to turn off the constant sense of urge. This could create overload in the pelvic floor. A trigger point develops, that can now cause a referral of symptoms back to her bladder, making her think she still has a bladder infection. Her cultures are negative..

I'd also recommend that you read this book:
https://ucpps.men/the-wise-anderson-protocol

I used to have to go to the toilet every 20 minutes until a PT treated a trigger point on my pelvic floor muscles which recreated my urge to urinate.

Hope this helps.

Outstanding info.My pelvic muscles are always contracting.Only on my left side for some reason. They ball up and stick out an inch or two sometimes.I showed it to my wife and she couldn't believe it.They do this constantly.I told my uro about it but he diddn't have anything to say about it.I am making a copy of the article and giving it to him to read. You are truley a great sight with some fine people!

My symptoms were also only on the left hand side.

You might also want to print off this interview with Jerome Weiss to show to your Uro. Dr Weiss is also a Urologist:
