NYC urologist or other MD?

Post by marc515515 »

Here's my story. I developed chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome in August 2003. Throbbing pain in my right testicle was my main symptom at first, and though I had felt twinges of it for weeks in advance, when it finally became sustained it was extremely painful. I live in New York City but my family is in Syracuse, NY. I went home where my parents were able to get me in to see a urologist the next day. The uro was a nice guy but (here comes the familiar story), after an examination and ultrasound, he concluded that the problem was a bacterial infection (epididymitis) that would soon pass. He gave me doxycycline and assured me I would be fine.

The pain never again reached such a high level and became more manageable but was still annoying. It would fluctuate, and sometimes I felt fine. I never had problems with urination, but I did sometimes have painful ejaculations. Furthermore, the pain was no longer centered in the testicle but I would sometimes feel it in my lower back, or along the crease of my groin, or in my inner thigh, buttock, or even down my leg, always on the right side.

Around November 2003 I saw the uro again, and he gave me Cipro, but it was clear that there was little else he could do for me.

Then I found this site and read "Headache in the Pelvis." I started doing stretches and relaxation every day, which brought about further improvement. After putting it off for a while, I've finally decided to get physical therapy.

I posted here a few weeks ago asking for recommendations for NYC PTs. I e-mailed Dr. Wise yesterday, and he e-mailed me back within 35 minutes (!!!) and said he was familiar with both the PTs that had been suggested to me and that they were both good. He gave his highest recommended to a third one, but she's located out on Long Island which is not practical for me.

So this brings me to my current problem. I called the first of the recommended PTs this morning, but she said I needed a prescription from a doctor to receive treatment. So I guess I need to see a NYC urologist or maybe just a regular MD who's familiar with CPPS, so I can THEN receive physical therapy. I obviously can't go to my other uro as he's not in the area, and he's not familiar with CPPS.

So does anyone know of an MD in NYC who might be able to help me?

Thanks for reading this. I wish everyone well.

Marc

Thanks so much for reading this, and I wish everyone good health.

Your family doctor can do this for you. Tell him that Dr. Wise made the recommendation and bring his book to your appointment.

Testicle Pain

Post by PainInPA »

I had a "Partial" Testicular Torsion back in November of 1999. It began when I noticed that the right testicle was not "staying" down where it normally would be, but was continually pushing up toward the penis. And, the pain - extreme pain and discomfort. My family doctor said it was epididymitis and gave me meds for that.

The pain continued - so I insisted on seeing a Uro. He checked and immediately said that it was a Partial Torsion and required surgery to fix. Post surgery - all is fine with that.

The pain that you describe was very similar to what I went through. Pain in the back, legs and especially in the testicle. Post surgery, I was fine, but now I've got the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome thing - which, I now believe was starting back at that time, because I recall reading the signs on Frequency for Urination and thinking, "That's me..."

Of course, the real extreme chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome symptoms for me didn't start until this past spring.

I read somewhere that a Tortion can be caused by a predisposed injury to the area from sports, or heavy lifting, etc. I believe mine was a kick to the groin for no apparent reason, from a fellow elementary classmate - who had no idea what future damage he was causing. Kids are cruel...

PT in NYC

Post by LifeInTurmoil »

I also live in New York City and I would be greatful for the name of the PT that Dr. wise recommended to you. I hear that there is an excellent urologist in the city named Dr. Attila Toth who is quite good at treating chronic prostatitis. The only down side is that he does not accept medical insurance, making treatments quite costly for the average citizen. The best always charge the most!! I hear that many men have claimed good results from this doctors techniques. I certainly wish that I could afford to give him a try as I am now at my wits end with this extremely painful and never ceasing condition! His address is:
65 E. 79th St.
New York, N.Y. 10021
tele: 212-717-4444
fax: 212-717-1868

I did some research on Dr. Toth. From what I've read, I was skeptical about him. He's a fertility expert and seems to believe prostatitis is bacterial or viral in nature rather than the result of muscle tension.
