massage mistake for CPPS??

Post by chelios »

I recently tried giving myself a prostate massage as I'd heard it could cause some relief of symptons. Unfortunately after the fact I read up more on it in more detail on the net, and now I feel based on my readings that I might of (among a few other things) pressed too hard on the prostate area (I basically pressed very firmly on the spot that simulated the pain at the tip of my penis and did so for about 10 or more seconds, twice, fairly hard till some prostate fluid was released)

Is it possible to cause any serious damage to the prostate by doing this?

It's only been 2 days since and I feel in a bit more pain than before, and I've had the return of 1 sympton that had actually gone away a year ago (leakage after urinating). So I'm basically kicking myself, but it's possible that the area is just reacting, and will return to "normal" (I really hope).

It's not so much the worsening of the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome that has me worried, cause it flucuates so much anyway, but I wanted to post to see if anyone knew whether I should be worried about anything that could be permenant physical damage based on a slightly improper prostate massage?

I apologize for this post not being particularly useful to most, I have a reasonable "improvement" story that I will post later. Thanks,

It most certainly was a trigger point in a muscle that you pressed on......
there are several muscles around the prostate......the reffered pain to the penis confirms that it is a TP.......
After succesfully releasing a TP pain often get worse at first.....then it usually gets better than it was before the teratment.......1 step back 2 step forward.....
but I dont recommend doing internal work on yourself without guidance from a skilled PT..

Yes, it is possible.

I am *not* an MD, and you should discuss any concerns you have about prostate massage with your urologist. It sounds like you put pressure on the prostate (you pressed on the right spot) since prostatic secretions were expressed, and the referred pain to the penis is what I experienced once during a prostate drainage. I suspect that the drainage inflamed your prostate, causing a flare. My guess is that you will feel better within a few days and that no permanent damage was done, so try to relax. Again, this is a layman's speculation. Please discuss your concerns with your physician.

BTW, have you noticed any bleeding?

It does not. Any pain in the prostate, including pain from direct massage or from a biopsy needle can be felt in the penis.

Hi, thanks for the responses and I definately won't be doing it again myself, I feel horrible thinking I could cause it to worsen. But as mentioned and as I'm hoping, it may return to normal (as in the normal about of pain!) shortly. Increased pain and leakage are the 2 symptons and neither are things I've never experienced before so I'm hoping there're both just a result of 'stirring' things up and will subside in a bit.

Thanks again,

I hope this worsening of your condition is only temporary, as I suspect. Please keep us updated.

Thanks again,
I've had similar flare-ups after a uro did a massage, followed by EPS. The discomfort should pass quickly. Gentle massage may be of value to you (or not) & you can do it yourself another time, just don't press too hard.

What has happened since...

Hi, I wanted to followup up on the massage I'd given myself 3 weeks ago, and I desparately want some feedback on what has currently happened to me.

One detail I did not mention previously about the massage and that I now realize is of great significance is that when I applied pressure I had an erection, and I forced it quite hard to release a bit of fluid, (didn't ejactulate.) But the issue is that there was probably a great deal of pressure already in the prostate and this was not the time to apply pressure and this is why I believe I have the 2 symptons listed below.

1.) The first major new sympton is: I now have semen leakage shortly after being aroused. (never had this before).

2.) At first in terms of pain, as some had suggested, it subsided or returned to normal, and I was feeling okay about the whole thing until 2 nights ago when I had my first real ejactulation since having done this; I didn't have an orgasm (concerning in itself) - but a minute or so afterwards I began experiencing great irratation. This pain has continued into the next 2 days, it is much stronger but similar to the chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome pain I experience. Yes I imagine it will improve eventually, but this will destroy any control I had of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome if this occurs everytime I ejaculate!!!

I am very very upset with myself, and I have read everything I can, all of my "new" symptons are on the net and seem to be asscotiated with a weakened "parasympathetic sexual nerve" that controls the release valve. Terms such as weakened, stressed and undercharged are used in describing it when it has these issues (but are probably being used for people who didn't do what I did). Chronic masturbation seems to be the primary cause and isn't an issue with me. This same information usually concludes with a product pitch so I haven't been able to tell if it can heal itself (they probably wouldn't want to say that cause it wouldn't make a sale.) And the main difference is that other people's symptons developed over the course of years and mine after 1 quick event, I don't know which would be worse...

If I had 1 question it would be, do you think I could of damaged this nerve permenantly, or can this nerve having experienced this physical trauma, heal and return to functioning? I know very little about nerves. This is almost a seperate problem now, but it will affect the other one greatly (CPPS), anyone with any knowledge of these new symptons or nerves, trauma, and healing, or any ideas at all, please help, I'm in the pitts of despair because it's my fault. And I don't think I can deal with this new problem if it doesn't go away or ever forgive myself.

Thank you,

I really think there's nothing you can do at this point but wait and see. No doctor will help you, AFAIK, and they may be irritated having to deal with what is a fairly nebulous problem. Wait and see what happens over the next 6 months. Nerves can recover to an extent, and moreover it's difficult to tell if you have any nerve damage at all, or simply some bruising. Or maybe just a lot of anxiety about nothing.

The fact that the pain subsided and only returned after an orgasm is hopeful. You waited 3 weeks to ejaculate -- this could be the cause of the increased irritation. Leaving it so long between ejacs is bad form if you have CPPS/PM.

In any case, your story serves as a warning to people doing this sort of thing with too much force.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.
