My symptoms and a question. ( forgot to sign in)

Post by theman »

Hey there,

I am a 35 years old and have a question about Prostatitis. In Nov. of 03 I went to my Family Practice Doctor complaining of pelvic floor pain and deep anal pain with strange pelvic floor twitching. After a digital exam he said my prostate was a little swollen and I had Prostatitis. He perscribed Levaquin, all was well in about a week.

About two weeks ago it seems to have come back. This time it is the same symptoms as above, now with a little pelvic and groin pain. The pelvic and groin pain feel like the same dull pain you get when you have not had sex for a while.(although I have). My doc put me on 250mg of Leviquin for 10 days again and it did not work. He then uped it to 500mg of leviquin but that made me sick after 2 days. Now he has me on 1000mg of Cipro for 10 days and it seems to be working slightly.

For about a month now(before the antiboitic) I have had symptoms of IBS. It seems like I have to go to the bathroom several times a day. And when its time, its time. I seem to have spasams and a lot of sweating in the pelvic floor area before I go.

My question is...

Are IBS and Prostatitis somehow related? Can the spasams from IBS trigger prostatitis?

It seems like my Prostatitis symptoms hurt a lot more whan I am having the spasams.

Hi,

At this stage of the game, I would reccomend you doing the following:
Get to the best urologist and neurologist you can find.
For the floor spasms, a combination of an alpha blocker such as Flomax could be helpful especially if used in conjunction with advil/tylenol/celebrex- take your pick. On the prostatitis, that is helped by antibiotics. What did the urine sample show? If there is an infection, which yours does not sound like, it would show. Be careful about too much antibiotics if you do not need them. Continue with the antibiotics until prostatits is gone. You should also look for ways to destress- message/acupuncture could be helpful. The neurologist can help out if there is a nerve involved- neurontin has helped me.
Good luck to you!

Theman:

Worth reading through the FAQ.

Yes, IBS and chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome are linked. Reading this page will give you some insights.

Read this thread on infections and antibiotics, i.e. you shouldn't take them when no infection has been found.

I get this as well. After a round of Cipro and doxy (for a month or so), my IBS got gradually worse. Needed to go to the toilet several times a day, not emptying fully. Every time I feel the need to go, I'd get tension (pulling in perineum and testicles pull up) and lots of sweating.

Now I've been on another round of Cipro and done some low-dose maintanance (how stupid) 100mg stuff. I recently noticed my tongue is more or less white (Candida?), and even after starting on fibre supplements recently, I'm very inconsistent.

My guess is that the abx are messing with me and you, and personally I'm finished with them. Just hoping to get my IBS back in check.

After 10 days of Cipro my prostate problems seem to have gotten better. I don't have the spasms or the pain in the A**. I quit caffeine and now I have urinate more then ever. I still have a slight groin pain but it seems to be getting better to. I usually would only urinate a few times a day but now I seem to go at least 10 times a day. Its not like I am urinating a small amount everytime I go. I am draining a full bladder(so I think).

Could this be a result of quitting caffeine? Has anyone else had the same results when they quit caffeine?

Thanks,
Dave

Very similar to what I experienced.
Quitting caffeine gave me the saem type of results and was one of the keys to me getting better. Also, I bought a special cushion to reduce the pressure on my pelvis, as I sit at desk most of the day.
Mostly, you need to monitor your diet and relax.
I have had IBS/loose stool for 10 years. But it never bothered me until this year when I started having prostitis and/or CPP symptoms. I think having diarrea a lot over the years have left my pelvic muscles a little tensed. When you feel tense, take deep breaths and relax. I do this when I drive. I avoid spicy foods and sauces that give me diarrea and I am becoming more comfortable with this new fatherhood thing.
My pelvic pain dropped over the course of a month after quitting caffeine and learning other tips from this site. I now have about 95% less discomfort and it seems to have leveled off at this point.

THE MAN

i know what you feel when you say when you have to urinate you urinate and I bet some times you just make it in time and when you do it is usually go a lot. I do not think your urinating more has anything to do with the caffeine as much as you have the signs of chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome if any thing caffeine would make you go more but who knows get your pelvic floor looked at and go from there I don't think your problems have anything to do with food or drink these things may make a problem worst but are not the cause.
