Summer is here and starting to suffer
With the summer arriving I'm starting to suffer from hayfever - however, I'm concerned with taking antihistamines due to the anticholinergic effect on prostatic and bladder smooth muscle.
I tried Atarax last year for my chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome and was in a fair amount of pain with it so stopped.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I start down the trial and error route? Any brands that have a low/no anticholinergic factor other than Atarax?
Thanks
Richard.

I find that Allegra (fexofenadine) is one of the most benign antihistamines. It may "grab" a little at your groin for the first week or two, but that wears off.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

Benadryl (Acrivastine) seems to have no antichlorenergic effect and acts in 15 mins. Not sure it's as thorough as the older types but it's OTC in Boots.

If you do use the old-fashioned (but very effective) antihistamines, you can sometimes avoid the anticholinergic effects by cutting the tablet up into quarters. Start with one quarter and see if it doesn't do the job for you.

While I'm at it...I don't use antihistamines any more as I find that a steroid spray, Nasonex, does the job for hayfever and year-round allergic rhinitis. You can get it from your GP. Beconase (again OTC at Boots) is similar.
I don't work for or promote Boots BTW

I can't keep away from the place. If I'm not collecting prescriptions I'm in there buying fish oil or a sandwich.

I had really bad sinusitis back in 1999/2000 and took antibiotics and antihistamines like crazy and nothing worked until I found Nasonex. Even other sprays like Flonase did not work for me. I used the Nasonex once in the morning for about two years and it worked great. Now I only use it occassionally. Great stuff for me. Wish it worked for my butt pain.

Sorry to hear that. Is that the Acrivastine version or the older Cetirizine one a day version? Or both?MastCells wrote:Benadryl causes big problems for me
I know Cetirizine has an antichlorenergic effect but I wasn't aware that Acrivastine did.

When we talk about Benadryl, we're actually talking about different drugs. I just went to Benadryl.com. It seems that Benadryl's active ingredient in the US is diphenhydramine, but in the UK, its active ingredient is acrivastine. I am bothered by the anticholinergic effects of diphenhydramine. I can't comment on acrivastine; I don't even know if I've ever taken it before.Richard.N wrote:Sorry to hear that. Is that the Acrivastine version or the older Cetirizine one a day version?
