Well add me to the list...

Post by 1 of the many »

I was also dealt the prostatitis card earlier this year.
I went to my regular doctor only to proceed to two urologists and get the famous "there's nothing wrong" answer... until after I researched more and found prostatitis. I then went back to the second urologist and he said well it does sound like prostatitis.

He put me on Levaquin and I'm not sure if it helped or not but I did lose the pain and symptoms. What I mean by not sure if Levaquin helped was that it seemed the symptoms were lessening just prior to him putting me on it.

I went a good 2-3 months of nothing then boom it came back, from what I think was a very stress time a few weeks ago here in the house. I have been suffering symptoms and pain now since then.

It does come and go and some days are better than others.

Reading more and more I find it amazing that stats show half of all men 20-50 have prostatitis. I have never had any friends complain, but now I wonder if it's just because it's a personal thing to deal with.

I am on Saw Palmetto, Quercetin (sp?) and Levaquin again. Nothing as of yet... though I just started a week ago on the Quercetin. I have heard and read good things about it and prostatitis. I wonder how many here have had good luck using it.

This is a very tough thing to deal with and I wish more men would come forward.

I also purchased "Headache in the Pelvis" though I do not think it will work for me. Reason being I don't know of any physical therapists anywhere close that can help in the way they need to. Aside from that though is the cost involved. As the book said most insurance will not cover so out of pocket expense can be high.

Is there anything else that I can do to help myself. Excercise? Meds? Anything at all...

I suffer from most of the same symptoms as people I have read about here. Also I have noticed that a couple of times now I have almost lost erection while having sex.

That is scaring me... That is something that really scares me. I am at the point of it happening even just a couple more times heading to doctor quick to find ou why and if need be... go on Viagra.

Anyone else been through this? I'm hoping it's isolated incidents that will pass. I also wonder if it's because during the time of sex the penis was in some pain...

As much as I hate it say it I am glad I do not suffer alone though...
I just think that we are cast aside by doctors and we need research done on this...

If you are talking of chronic pelvic pain, the figure is somewhere between 2 and 8%. Experts differ, as do definitions.

Confused

Post by 1 of the many »

OK, so is there a difference in "prostatitis" and "CPPS"?

Also what stat did I read about?

I did read half of men between 20-50 suffered from what I thought was prostatitis. But am I totally confused now?

OK, after reading the page it seems there's not a very clear difference to me.

I am safe to assume that prostatitis and chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome are the same? Or are they two different entities themselves?

Prostatitis simply means "inflammation of the prostate", no more. These days it is usually used to refer to acute prostatitis, a medical emergency involving infection of the prostate gland.

Chronic bacterial prostatistis, rather rare, is another entity. Not our concern here.

Informally, nonbacterial chronic prostatitis became CP/CPPS, then just chronic pelvic pain, and now here (in many cases): pelvic myoneuropathy.

The medical profession still uses CP/CPPS (researchers, good uros) or even more commonly "chronic nonbacterial prostatitis" (typical uro or GP).

It's a little confusing.

OK, I think I see the differences now. Thanks webslave.

So stat wise only 8% of the male population suffer from CPPS?

I thought the stat was higher in Dr. Wise' book.
I could be wrong though.

I swear though I had read half of all men between 20-50 suffer from what we are suffering. Maybe I was mistaken on what it was though.

As I said, estimates vary. Here's a conservative study.

There's a lot of things you can do... which you can learn about poking around here and at ucpps.men & viewtopic.php?t=1653

Without any clinician's help (tho you might want instruction in focused relaxation), you can still implement all the rest of what you learned about in "A Headache." Physical therapy makes that protocol very powerful, but take the PT out and it's still nothing to sneeze at. Some would say that that stuff is indispensible if (as is most commonly the case) muscle tension is the keystone of your problem.

Diet

Post by darwin »

Have you changes your diet yet?
I am also newly diagnosed and learned a lot here and quickly found that pop and sitting for extended periods were my main culprits. I bought a tempurpetic seat cushion and cut an ellipse out of the middle to reduce pressure on my pelvis. And I stopped drinking pop all togethor. I truly believe that my pop/caffeine addiction caused my 2 month flare up. I was drinking about 5 cans of coke a day. After reading about it here, I cut down to 1 coffee in the morning and no more caffeine the rest of the day and no pop at all. Within a few days, my symptoms got much better and I'm now about 95% symptom free.

My uroligist gave me a note that says
Reduce caffeine
Reduce Alcohol
Increase ejaculation
Use ibuprofen and warm baths to treat symptoms.
(and he took me off the Levaquin, since there's no bacteria anyway)

Darwin - good advice.

I'd also recommend Ultram (Tramadol) for pain management - it's been very effective for a lot of sufferers.

Richard.
