cold medicine

Post by james-d »

Well - Like many CP suffereers - I used to take various cold medicines when needed (sudefed, etc.).

Now that I have had this - I am reluctant to take anything due to prostate related side effects.

So - what is the consensus on some "good" cold medicines once you have had prostate problems?

I am primarily interested in a decongestant - is there one that does not adversly effect prostate?

It may be a pipe dream on my part - any input is appreciated.

I am totally symptom free of CP now (have been for a while) but I don't want to press my luck with anything that could cause a relapse.

I appreciate the input.

James -D,

Can you please post a "sucess story" ? Or at least tell us what your symptoms were and how lonbg time it took for them to go away?
Also ofcourse if you did/took anything special for it to go away?

How about a steroid spray like Nasonex? Or Xylitol spray is available in the US.

I take Nasonex for chronic sinusitis type congestion. Seems to help. It's prescripton only in the UK but there is an over the counter version called Benadryl you could try.

decongestants

Post by Ragu »

There are no oral decongestants available OTC or prescription that will not affect the prostate. You could try some Afrin nasal spray it is a decongestant, however most of its effect will be local. Don't use it for more than three days. Steriod nasal sprays are only good for chronic allergic rhinitis!! THey are very poor decongestants.

sincerly,

Cold Medicine

If you have a cold, the typical medications are either antihistamines for drying, or decongestants. The antihistamines (like Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton) are very anti-cholinergic, that is why they dry you out, and may cause some constipation. The anti-cholinergic effect is known to cause problems for people with BPH, because it makes it more difficult to urinate. I'm not sure why that would cause a problem with CPPS, unless part of your problem includes dysuria, or urinary related symptoms (rather than pain). Constipation may be a contributory factor to discomfort too. Decongestants on the other hand, most notably pseduoephedrine, or Sudafed, are not as known to cause direct prostate problems. But it is a stimulating drug, and may exacerbate anxiety, and hence pain. Further, one wonders if it could cause some direct prostate effect similar to caffeine. But since caffeine doesn't bother everyone, I don't think Sudafed would either. I have not had a problem with antihistamines or decongestants, but my symptoms are primarily pain related, not as much urinary dysfunction. I haven't yet rechallenged myself with caffeine since the last serious flare a month ago.
