I have taken Atarax for 5 months now (50 mg/day) and I have been slowly better on the frequency side (Right now 8 hours since I last went). I do not know if I shall thank the Atarax or my Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol or maybe time for the benefit. Atarax has not helped my pain/ache that much I think. Stretches, PT and relaxation has done the most job there.

Thanks mate (btw - all the best to you and yours over Xmas and new year).
The frequency side has been getting better for me as well - with the Stanford/Wise-Anderson Protocol and time. I'm wondering if Atarax will help me get over the finish line sooner.
I guess I'm just balancing up taking more medication or not
I'm not interested in taking the Atarax if it means I have to take alpha-blockers as well to combat the tightness/pain but I don't mind putting up with the extra discomfort if it'll only be there for a few days before the side effects wear off.
Just a note: for the first few days that I took hydroxyzine I had a slight increased pressure/discomfort feeling in the bladder/prostate area, but this was controlled with an alpha blocker (Hytrin or Flomax). IMO you must start from a low dose (10mg - 25mg at night), and I don't recommend more than 50mg a day (I take 25mg a day). Newer antihistamines are not as bad for the prostate, but still have some effect.
I might try reducing the dosage. Btw - how do people take less dosage with Atarax? - as the pills are tiny even in 50mg format.
Mine come in 25 mg. I take one in the morning and one at night. I was very sleepy in the beginning, but that went away after 2-3 weeks. I recomend staring low like Mark suggested. And then increase gradually.
Btw, I will call later this week. I also have your file.

I'll see if I can get them in 25mg format over here

I was able to get 25mg here. If you want to start on a lower dose cut them in half! Tricky but can be done.

I have been taking Atarax for over a year. For the first six months or so I took 25mgs but had little effect. I upped it to 50mgs at bedtime and I seem to be better. It seems to take a few months to notice the difference. I have not noticed a tightening in the prostate area but I also take Flomax.
I really never have frequency except when I have too much sex. My main complaint has been a burning ache in the pelvis. My ache is much better the last few months, almost to the point of being where I was before the really bad chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome hit me two years ago. I am pretty happy now with my progress. My question to the forum is: now that I am better can I stop taking the prostaprotek, elmiron, Atarax, Flomax regiment? Do I take these forever?

My opinion on this is that you could try tapering off each medication, starting with the Atarax. Once full tapered off a medication, pause two weeks before tapering off the next item to see if any changes are creeping in. However, be aware that you may have to go back on to some or all of them permanently to maintain improvement. This is an individual thing.
