Split stream is usually caused by an obstruction or narrowing of the urethra:
A Urologist wrote:A lot of men have a split stream upon initiation of voiding. The flow is slower and easier to go off course. Prostatism (the collection of symptoms related to prostate function as related to urine flow) or a urethral stricture (narrowing of the urethra from scarring from STDs or trauma) are the most likely causes though nerve problems with an individuals bladder can at times result in this slowing of your flow. If this continues to be a problem or gets worse I would have it looked into by a Board Certified Urologist. They can measure the flow or look in with a scope to see if there is a narrowing.
Good News! The great ProstaQ is BACK at last! You must try it.

choking the flow?

Post by robertpagen »

But then to build on that point, how could it be that I used to have split stream and no longer have it? A stricture would not fix itself. Unless the tighter muscles were choking the flow of urine.

Happy weekend,

Robert

I was frightened that I had a stricture but my cystoscopy ruled that out completely.....my urethra is as normal as should be. I always notice it is worse after ejaculation.....so perhaps the very strong muscle contractions involved in an orgasm temporarily tightens everything up.

But many guys without urinary problems miss the toilet regularly as well. I guess that's why a lot of women are annoyed by us not putting the seat up and some women I know actually encourage their husbands/boyfriends to sit down while peeing. :-D
Age:23 | Onset Age:22 | Symptoms:Urinary hesitancy, moderate frequency, urgency and retention, slight perinneum, rectal and leg pain, frequent abdominal/bladder pain. Red/white spotty irritation on penis | Helped By:hot baths or showers, walking and moving around, pain medications | Worsened By: sitting for a long time, holding urine too long. I'd say I'm about 75% better naturally so far.

Re-read the quoted text. The uro mentions that the most common cause is prostatism (BPH and prostatitis-related). This includes swelling and inflammation.

ah, yes...prostatism. My GP is now saying I never had prostatitis/CPPS but rather, a "prostatism" since it jsut appeared to be immflamation and is improving for unknown reasons, virtually on its own. I'm not sure I understand the difference really since all the symptoms were the same and this has been with me since June in many different forms.
