CPPS and kidney stones

Post by Bill in NH »

Is there anyone else with chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome who has passed kidney stones?

I developed the classic symptoms of CPPS/IC in January 2003 and then passed my first kidney stone in Sept 2003. The stone was calcium oxalate (the most common type by far) and my 24 hr urinary excretion of oxalate was extremely high, 69 mg compared to the normal range of 5-40 mg. Oxalate, which is an acid, damages the cells in the kidney (leading to kidney failure in extreme cases) and the damaged cells release inflammatory substances. With dietary modification - low oxalate, HIGH calcium intake - I have brought my 24 hr urinary excretion of oxalate down to 39.

I began the Stanford procotol over the summer and have since improved. In fact, my PT says that my internal pelvic muslces now feel completely normal to her (and to me too). However, most of my annoying urinary symptoms - bladder and urethral irritation - persist. This makes me think that my previous muscle tension was secondary to some primary problem with my lower urinary track, possibly related to the high oxalate level.

Anyone else with stones? Anyone else with persistent urinary symptoms after 'successful' PT?
