Flare Up After Three Years - Group B Strep?

Post by beemer »

This is my first time posting here. A little background...I suffered my first attack of prostatitis about 6 years ago. I made mulitple trips to my primary care physician, took multiple courses of antibiotics with no relief before I was referred to a urologist. I gave up coffee, alchohol and spicy foods as recommended. I had my prostate fluid and semen checked for bacteria - result was negative. Each time I had a flare up, I took a course of Levaquin which seemed to help. I have been symptom free (cured?) for the last three years. Have been able to drink coffee and alcohol and eat anything I want with no impact. Almost forgot I ever has prostatitis. Since that first flare up 6 years ago, my wife and I had not had unprotected sex. I had been resistant to not using a condom because we found out that she was a Group B Strep carrier about 8 months prior to my first infection. I decided to not use a condom about a week ago and wouldn't you know, I could tell something was wrong after 2 days. Within 4 days, I was in back in hell. The pain was like in the old days. I went back to see my uro and am on Levaquin for 20 days. Feeling better (anti-inflammtory benefits of antibiotic, maybe) By the way, I don't really experience any side affects from Levaquin. My uro explained to me that it is very unlikely that my wife's Group B Strep would cause this flare up, less than a 1% chance. My questions...is my uro right? Is this flare up a coincidence? Has anyone made a Group B Strep link to prostatitis. Could this flare up be in my head? Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated. Thanks

The removal of the condom had an effect on the level of nerve stimulation, and coupled with anxiety: whammo.

Thanks. Can you tell me how common it is for prostatitis to flare up after unprotected sex?
