Kegels

Post by lee_28_leeds »

Just noticed a funny thing........

Did 5 reps of kegels sat at my desk, hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20.

Then stood up went outside and did another 5 reps but stood up, same again, hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20. Each time making sure that my pelvic floor muscles totaly relaxed.

Then, after standing outside in the cold decided I needed to pee, and to my suprise when I did there was absolutely no pain what so ever, I mean I couldn't even hardly feel the urine flow.

Do kegels have this effect, obviously its short lived but I'll try it agian and see if its the same!

Anyone else noticed this before?

Anyone considering Kegel Excercises might want to review:

A light regimin of Kegels seemed to help me and Lee's initial experience suggest that they may be helping him too.

Please be careful, Lee. Don't overdo it. Because of the "Wind-up" phenomenon -- which explains why so many experience pain 16-24 hours AFTER ejaculation--any negative effects of Kegels may not be apparent immediately.

But as indicated in link cited, Kegels do cause flares/problems for some people, and Dr. Wise does not recommend them.

Lee, you've got the basic understanding now with respect to the role of pelvic floor muscles. Keep going forward! But remember that "slow and steady" is the way.

lee_28_leeds:

Kegels seem to be a controversial topic in chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome treatment.

I have had good success with Kegels when paired with biofeedback. A trained Physical Therapist can measure the level of elevation of your pelvic floor resting tone, and you can "see" the effect of the strength and duration of the Kegels on a computer screen. After several sessions of biofeedback, you can learn how much and how strong you should conduct Kegels. In my case, this was part of treatment for pelvic floor spasms. I was advised not to do Kegels immediately before urination.

Everyone's situation is different, so I'd suggest researching your situation and checking with your doctor (and possibly seeing a pelvic floor specialist).

I've had a similar experience to both TK and MS. When I still had active trigger points in my PFM, they would not relax after performing a Kegel. When these had all been treated, an EMG assessment of my pelvic floor revealed that when I performed the very lightest Kegel I could possibly feel and held it for 10 seconds, when I released it, the resting tone of my PFM dropped dramaticaly. My EMG reading dropped to normal after just a few repetitions.

However, the physio I visited made an important point that you need to constantly 'check in' with your pelvic floor and make sure it is relaxed - a similar concept to Dr Wise's 'moment to moment relaxation'. She also stated that any type of kegels may increase the resting tone in some men, so any 'prescription' of kegels can only be given after a full EMG evaluation of the pelvic floor.

I'd agree 100% with the point TK makes - Don't overdo it.
This is not Medical advice - Consult your Doctor!

Age:39. Age at onset:31. Symptoms prior to treatment: Golf ball in rectum, severe urinary frequency (2-3x/hr; 5-10x/night); weak stream; painful ejaculation; coccygeal pain; tip of penis pain; general pelvic pain on left; testicular pain; supra-pubic pain. Current | Symptoms: Urinary frequency 1x every 2-3 hrs and 1-2 x a night; mild pelvic pain on left hand side (all symptoms still improving!)
Helped by: Trigger point release; avoiding exercise; pelvic floor relaxation; Neurontin decreased bladder sensitivity somewhat. Worsened by: Exercise; frequent ejaculation; ibuprofen irritates bladder. Made no difference: Diet; biofeedback; quercetin; Steroid anti-inflammatories; Elavil.

****UPDATE*** I am now able to sit again at work all day, and can perform moderate aerobic exersise again for the first time in 8 years!!!
